  • Crate & Barrel 18th St. Platter
    crateandbarrel.com
Modern and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in glaze. The artisan's hand is authentically reproduced in this stoneware pattern designed exclusively for Crate and Barrel by ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman at her 18th Street studio in New York City. A contemporary matte black exterior contrasts the rustic beauty of a shiny, speckled white glazed interior ringed with the subtly raised spiral associated with hand-thrown pieces. A raised clay rim features a sandy glaze that evokes the feel of exposed terra cotta. To capture the artisan look of this dinnerware, Erteman modeled prototypes to true scale by hand with her original glazes as reference for production. In the words of the designer, "When making tableware, I consider design and the rigors of daily use. The spirit of my hand in these pieces is modest, to harmonize with and act as a support to the prepared ingredients." Stoneware. Dishwasher-, microwave- and oven-safe to 300 degrees. Made in Thailand.

  • Eva Zeisel Granit Salt and Pepper Shaker Set
    dwr.com
In 1926, the Kispester-Granit factory in Budapest hired Eva Zeisel, who was 20 years old at the time, as a designer. It was only her first job, but the company was so impressed with her initial work that they created a special art department for her. The employees, who normally produced ceramic sinks, all wanted to work with Zeisel as she brought elegant vases, whimsical rhinoceros-shaped ashtrays and beautiful teapots into the product mix. The factory closed her department after just one year, but the experience sparked a brilliant career. Almost 60 years later, Zeisel returned to the factory and designed the Granit Collection (1983). Though widely exhibited, the set – which features her signature fluid, sensuous curves – wasn’t put into production until 2009. DWR worked closely with Zeisel to ensure that Granit adheres to her exacting standards. “I like the way the very thin, hard edges of the plates change into a soft, inviting bellybutton,” she said. “All the pieces together make a very nice family.” The plates and bowls each feature a dimple in the center, and their matte white finish offers a neutral backdrop for culinary delights. This collection is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Made in China.

Johan Rohde’s designs are characterised by hammer marks and oxidisation techniques. His designs are also highly stylized in comparison with the naturalistic Art Nouveau style, however, not strictly geometrical either like the typical Art Déco style that followed. Johan Rohde’s designs can therefore be classified neither as Art Nouveau nor Art Déco; instead something in between. The handle on this coffee pot is made out of ebony wood – a very hard type of wood. Each handle is made especially for the individual pot. The socket – the small piece where the handle is attached - is handmade and thus, may vary slightly from pot to pot - it may be only a 1/10 of a millimetre – but still each handle must be fitted specifically for the individual pot. Design year: 1933. Materials: Sterling silver, ebony. Measurements: H: 17.1 cm / 6.73 inches Ø: 17.8 cm / 7 inches.

  • Harald Nielsen PYRAMID tea pot 600B
    georgjensen.com
Shaped like an inverted pyramid, this coffee and tea set is very stringent in outline. The elements are based on geometric shapes: The ball, the triangle, the circle and straight lines. The lines are slightly curved, the profiles are accentuated, and the leaf underneath the jug’s handle accentuates the sweep of its arch. The Pyramid design belongs to the Art Déco style, which was an international style of design and architecture. The form language of Art Déco favoured the basic structures of geometry like the cube, the triangle and the circle. The inspiration came from various free art movements like Dada’s machine aesthetic, Cubism’s geometrical approach and Surrealism’s interest in the subconscious. The spectacular discovery of the virtually intact tomb of King Tutankhamen in Egypt also influenced the Art Déco style with motifs from the Egyptian furniture and pyramids. The handles are of ebony wood – a very hard type of wood. Each handle is made especially for the individual pot and creamer. The socket – the small piece where the handle is attached - is handmade and thus, may vary slightly from pot to pot - it may be only a 1/10 of a millimetre – but still each handle must be fitted specifically for the individual pot. The shape of this service is a challenge to the silversmith. Silver is a very lively material when it is heated and especially when the top of the pot is soldered on it is vital that the top part is kept at an even temperature all the time. Otherwise, the silver will bend out of shape. Design year: 1930. Materials: Sterling silver, ebony. Measurements: H: 13.6 cm / 5.35 inches Ø: 17.8 cm / 7 inches.
