Everyone’s heard of Taylor Swift right…? She’s a popular country-pop musician. I’m a bit of a fan. Okay, a lot of a fan. I know all the lyrics to all her songs, and hers was the first song I learned to play on 4 of my instruments (I aim to be able to play my age in instruments. But that’s another story…) So obviously, as a bit of a (a.k.a. HUGE) Swiftie, I was a bit put out by the claims of plagiarism. Okay, so we all know that Untouchable isn’t actually her song but she put that she wrote it in her booklet, but that’s not to say she’s a known plagueriser?
I mean Taylor Swift? She’s so adorable! This is what led me to check this out. Sort of an ‘Is Taylor Swift plagiarising other people’s work, and does it matter?’ type thing. So stick around if you want to know what I found, be it positive or negative, but before we begin: I AM NOT A HATER. In fact, I’m the opposite! So yeah, Taylor Swift, no hate here. And this has no EXTENSIVE research (I’m too lazy for that.)
So, we’ll start with Saving Jane. My friend told me about this song by Saving Jane called Girl Next Door [http://www.roxwel.com/player/savingjanegirlnextdoor.html?1=1&detect_bitrate=_2000] which I have linked. If this link doesn’t work, pull up a lyrics video on YouTube. What I’ve linked is the official music video. TO THE POINT: Hear You Belong With Me? “She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers?” Well, the lyrics are pretty much parallel to this song. It’s generally “She is the prom queen, I’m in the marching band. She is a cheerleader, I’m sitting in the stands”. The music video opens with a “nerd” with huge glasses dropping her books. The Guy picks them up for her, but then gets into a car with his Cheerleader Girlfriend. So alright. I thought “meh. Coincidence.” What I didn’t think was a coincidence, however, was the melody to this song as compared to I’d Lie. Check it out. It’s by Swift. It’s good. But the thing is the choruses have (literally) THE SAME tune. Hm…
And then there’s Check Yes Juliet by We the Kings. It’s basically along the lines of Love Story (“So I sneak out to the garden to see you = “just sneak out and don’t tell a soul” and “We’re dead if they knew” = “They’ll tear us apart if you give them the chance” and “you were throwing pebbles” = “I’ll keep tossing rocks at your window and “All there’s left to do is run” = “Run baby run don’t ever look back” and “baby just say yes” = “Check yes Juliet” and – okay so the list goes on.) But fair enough. There are a lot of songs about Romeo and Juliet. But, um. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsC5x3bGhdU Yeah. It’s pretty similar.
To draw some more parallels, listen to complicated by Avril (by the way, the music video to Girlfriend REALLY reminds me of You Belong With Me, but that’s just a random point. Sorry.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FynZChaDqQs Just the beginning verse. And now…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7CpWqkXSTY That’s The Way I loved You by Taylor Swift. Yeah, I’m seeing it too.
Some more things out there are the intro to One Republic’s Apologize is the intro to Taylor Swift’s You’re Not Sorry. There are claims that Story of Us is a rip off of Shake it (YouTube both titles together), but I don’t see it. Also, apparently the intro to this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YCrzkDBpsE is the “mm-mmm-mm” bit in Breathe, but that allegation is a tiiiiny bit pathetic.
Anyway, as my personal opinion I DO believe that Taylor Swift has copied SOME music. Fine. Not the Shake it thing, that’s a little vague, but I’d Lie’s similarity to Saving Jane’s song speaks loud and so do numerous other things. But although Taylor Swift isn’t the most original person around, (references made to 2:00 AM 3 times,
to activities in the rain 7 times,
to fairytale magic and princesses 5 times,
boys compared to light 6 times,
driving (usually in a truck) 12 times,
and crying – I won’t even go there), it doesn’t mean she’s not a talented girl for getting away with it. I mean, the Black Eyed Peas have been sued how many times exactly for this?? So yes, I still like Taylor Swift. And I think, overall, if this is anything it is commending Taylor Swift on her ability to copy without copying. It. Is. Genius.
Anyyway, thanks for your time! No hate! :) xxx
