Today is the day! I can’t believe this is happening. After 15 years of dancing I am finally trying out for So You Think You Can Dance UK! My mother has been trying to get me to try out for years but I decided they wouldn't take me until I was 17. And now I am and audition day is finally here.
“Catie are you ready?” my mother yells.
As I run down the stairs I see my mum and brother waiting for me by the door.
“Let’s go, nice outfit by the way. Very simple yet stunning”
“Thanks Josh, where is your newest boyfriend?” I wink at my brother, who by the way is gay and has a new boyfriend every couple weeks, yet I haven’t had one at all.
“No boyfriend, lets go little dancer.”
I always loved my brothers nickname for me, obvious, simple, yet somehow very special. Josh is 23 and my best friend in the whole world, next to my mother of course. Her name is Josie, her and my brother are coming with me for support, which I desperately need. Without them I wouldn’t be in the car on my way to audition for SYTYCD UK in 2 hours.
1 hour later:
I finally arrive at the studio with my family and stand in the check in line.
“So are you excited?! Look at all these cute guys you could dance with! Ooh especially him!” Josh said a little too loudly and pointed to a guy whose name tag said Sean.
“Josh shush let your sister relax. You can do this Catie you are a phenomenal dancer. You have such an amazing talent and you shouldn’t waste it worrying.”
“Thanks mum.” I said while smiling at her.
As I am checking in the lady tells me I will be one of the last few people to audition. “Oh great, just what I need.” I think to myself as my family and I sit and wait.
More and more people go on stage, audition, and walk back into the waiting room to leave. Some happy, and some completely heart broken. I can’t help but wonder which I will be.
As my turn draws very near (2 more people before me) I am asked to go stand backstage with my mum and brother. We walk backstage and I watch the girl auditioning before me, she is amazing! But the judges say no and she walks off stage crying. “I can’t believe it she was amazing! How could she not go through, what are they going to think of me?” I think as I hug my mum and brother and walk on stage.
“Hi there what is your name?” Nigel asks.
“Hello my name is Catie Monroe.”
“Hi Catie what style of dance will you be doing and to what song?” Arlene asks with a smile.
“Contemporary to Kiss Me by Ed Sheeran.”
“Alright let’s see it.” Sisco said.
I began my dance and ended in 2 minutes and now it was time for critiquing and voting.
“I think your legs were absolutely perfect throughout the entire dance, but you need to work on your facial expressions a bit more, and your arms. But all in all it was quite a lovely dance so I am going to say yes.” Arlene said
“I’m not sure you are ready for this. The extensions were not up to par and your turns seemed off, so I am going to say no." claimed Sisco.
“I loved it! It was absolutely beautiful and intriguing I could not keep my eyes off you! 100% yes!” Louise claimed excitedly.
Now I was just down to Nigel, if he said no I would be leaving, but if he said yes I would go on to BootCamp.
“Well I liked your facial expressions, they fit the song nicely. Your legs seemed a bit shaky but that might be your nerves. Your turns need a bit of an improvement, which also might be your nerves, but the one problem I had were your feet. On almost every turn they were flat and not pointed. You really need to point your toes to make the dance much smoother. I honestly don’t know how to vote but I am going to say… yes you are through” Nigel stated and I thank the judges and practically leapt off the stage. I was so happy I couldn’t even talk! My mum and brother congratulated me and we went home to celebrate.
