  • Menu A/S Turning Table
    shophorne.com
At Menu we are obsessed with clever solutions for modern living. We want to make beautiful objects for everyday use, whether that’s an indispensable item of kitchen equipment, a clever floating shelf or a beautiful vase that adds the finishing touch to your living space.Wherever we can, we work locally with craftspeople around the world, preserving skills while creating the best modern design. German designer Theresa Arns was experimenting with ways of combining a table and storage when she stumbled upon the idea of a lid that opens by rotating it around one of the legs. The result is elegant, unpretentious and utterly addictive (show it to guests and they will be opening and shutting Turning Table for hours). “My design is quite functional,” says Theresa. “But I also think it’s important that the objects we surround ourselves with have a warm and poetic part.”

    dwr.com
Born in Tokyo and raised in New England, Jonah Takagi earned a bachelor’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. Pursuing his two passions, he spent the last decade designing furniture and playing bass guitar for several indie rock bands. Unfortunately, being on the road gave him little time to showcase his furniture, leaving him with a house full of products no one had seen. To showcase his growing body of work, he founded Atelier Takagi in 2005. His Tier Table (2015) draws from the architectural language of modernist 1960s high-rises. Featuring legs that have been relocated from the corners to the sides, this is a modern table that’s firmly planted on the ground, with tiered shelves for extra storage. Made in Taiwan.

    shophorne.com
Ilimari Tapiovaara was committed to designing furniture for a much broader market. His goal was to produce quality inexpensive furniture that was made from materials that were readily available in Finland. The rustic simplicity and smaller structure made the Pirkka Collection very popular for use in the smaller homes in the post war era of the 1950s. The Pirkka Collection is made of solid wood with simple, clean lines which make for stylish functionality. The wood is joined together using no screws making it remarkably lightweight. The rustic table carries with it the aesthetic appeal of modern design even 50 years later. The table is available in a variety of lengths making it ideal for several different locations. The bench can be paired with the table or used as a stand lone piece. The wider than usual width makes it a comfortable seat. The side chair also pairs well with the table but can stand on its own and the stool completes the set and is available in 4 heights to make it even more versatile. The seats and table top are stained pine with a black stained solid birch frame.

  • Norm Architects Finn Coffee Table
    dwr.com
Danish designers Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn named their company Norm to express their dedication to “working with Danish norms and standards refined over hundreds of years,” says Bjerre-Poulsen, “rather than rejecting them in the endless search for new.” The sincerity of their approach – bypassing flashy design for good design – shows in the quality of their work. These are products that endure both physically and aesthetically. The Finn Collection (2013) they developed for Design Within Reach is directly tied to their philosophy in that it was built on a passion for details, tactility in design and creating for the need. “Norm products never crave to be anything but what they are,” says Rønn. “That is the combination of utility, purity and quiet beauty.” The teak frames can be oiled to maintain their original color or left alone to develop a beautiful silvery patina. Made in Indonesia. The Finn Collection has been honored with a 2015 Architizer A+ Jury Award – selected by 300-plus international architecture and design leaders – and a 2014 Chicago Athenaeum Good Design® Award.

The table feet are just like the Viipuri-chairs out of birch plywood to form an L: The first success of Aaltos experiments, to bent plywood. With these researches he reached exceptional results; weightless swinging furniture pieces that didn’t found equals in the 1930s or later. The rectangular table 81B can be useful as side-table or couch table, but also as a decorative piece of furniture for entrance halls or as a night-table. The timeless, elegant forms of the Kiki Couch Table by Artek emerged out of the year 1960, when Ilmari Tapiovaara designed it. The Kiki collection was such a huge success that the following development of furniture design was sustainably influenced by it. The continuously quality tested Couch Table, produced in Finland, consists of a laminate board and a steel frame. If one looks a bit closer to it, one will find out that the steel tube is oval, and not round as most of the steel tubes are. This subliminally offers a completely different effect to it. Also the rest of the manufacturing is orientated by the design: This is how the welds are worked flawlessly and the high quality lacquer equips the astonishingly weightless, but still very stable frame with its elegant appearance. The apparently very weightless Kiki Couch Table can be combined with many styles and also used in public as well as private rooms. The Kiki collection won the golden medial on the Milan Triennial in its emerging year 1960 and it counts to the most used pieces of furniture in public areas in Finland. The Kiki Couch Table is available in different editions. Moreover the Kiki collection includes a couch table (140 x 60 cm) and a dining table (140 x 60 cm).
  • Milo Baughman Drum Side Table
    dwr.com
“Furniture that is too obviously designed,” said Milo Baughman, “is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums.” While we could certainly see his Drum Table (1970s) in a museum, it would earn its place there for its simplicity and lack of unnecessary ornamentation. Distilling the idea of an occasional table to its simplest form, Baughman’s cylindrical design draws you in with its smoothness and warmth. It features seams that are painstakingly welded, ground and polished by hand until they blend in as much as possible. Once constructed, Drum is coated with bronze, oxidized and hand-relieved to give it a unique patina, eschewing the sterility of machine-made pieces. It includes leveling floor glides to compensate for uneven surfaces. Made in U.S.A.

Alvar Aalto unavoidably embossed the image of the Finnish brand Artek with his simple and curved designs, being the co-founder of the company. Alvar Aalto designed the Nesting Tables 88 in 1935. The name describes side tables that fit inside of each other. The slightly changing width and height of the tables makes it possible to store them without needing much space inside of each other – ready to be expanded when there are more things to be placed on a side table. The resistant feet of birch wood were formed like an L with a technique developed by Aalto – which is also characteristic for almost all his works. According to the philosophy of Artek (Art + Technology), the Nesting Tables 88 connect classic design with high functionality. The tables can be delivered alone or in a set with table tops of birch veneer or white laminate.
