  • Artek Kiki Lounge Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Ilmari Tapiovaara, 1960. Lacquered steel frame, PU foam & dacron, upholstery. Made in Finland by Artek. Tapiovaara wanted to design inexpensive furniture for a broader audience. He made use of materials that were readily available in Finland in the 1940s, such as solid birch. Later in the 1950s, he began to develop multipurpose chairs made of steel tubing and plywood. Ilmari Tapiovaara designed Kiki in 1960. It was originally conceived as a chair whose stackability allowed it to be used to seat large groups, such as in auditoriums. In the Kiki series Tapiovaara employed a more clean cut design idiom instead of the more organic style he had favored previously. Instead of wood, he chose oval steel tubing as the structural and unifying element of the whole Kiki collection. Kiki was a success, establishing the current direction for furniture design at this time. Kiki's timeless and elegant design idiom has made it one of the most popular pieces of public furniture in Finland. finnishdesignshop.com
The seat and the backrest of the Domus chair are upholstered with black leather. The frame is made of lacquered oak. The Finnish interior architect and designer Ilmari Tapiovara designed the Domus chair in 1947 for the Domus Academica student housing complex, in Helsinki. Designing the interiors of the Domus Academica of the architect Pauli Salomaa was the first important commission for Ilmari Tapiovaara and his wife Annikki Tapiovaara and they designed also the furniture for the student housing. The Domus chair was designed to be a true all-purpose chair to meet the diverse needs of the Domus Academica student housing. It was supposed to serve as a work chair in student rooms, but also in the hallways, auditoriums, canteens, negotiation rooms etc. The student was taken into account in the design of the chair: it had to be comfortable for sitting, and it had to support the back. The chair required little space and was stackable. It was made of form-pressed birch plywood by the Keravan Puuteollisuus company. The Domus chair was a success both in Finland and abroad. Manufacturer: Artek. Design: Ilmari Tapiovaara. Size: Height 79 cm, width 58 cm, depth 54 cm, seat height 45 cm. Material: Seat and back form pressed birch plywood, frame and armrests solid oak.
