  • Charles and Ray Eames Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames® Plywood Elephant
    dwr.com
Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants are found in Charles' photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Eames Plywood Elephant (1945) is among the plywood pieces designed by the Eameses and one of the most difficult to produce. In the early 1940s, they successfully developed an innovative method for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, which they used to produce a wide range of furniture and sculptural objects. To render the Elephant, tight angles and compound curves require a sophisticated mastery of plywood technology. It was so complicated that the full-size Plywood Elephant never went into production. Only two prototypes were made, both of which were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in 1945 and 1946. Today only one known model remains in the possession of the Eames family. Vitra Design Museum has reproduced the Plywood Elephant at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Each miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Made in Poland.

  • Luru Home 20" x 20" Skipper Pillow
    shophorne.com
LuRu Home works with Artisans along China's eastern seaboard to produce indigo hand - dyed textiles. Chinese have practiced Nankeen indigo hand - dying, a sibling of Japanese Shibori, for over 3,000 years. The process remains largely preserved despite the idustrialization of the textile market. Local artisans apply a soybean - rice paste to cotton and linen through hand-cut screens. After an extended period of shade drying, craftsmen dip the cloth repeatedly into indigo baths. Upon oxidation the fabric gains a vibrant blue, and is set to dry in the sun. Artisans scrape the soy - rice paste carefully away by knife. Luru home then takes this material and converts it into some of the most beautiful housewares we have ever seen. Includes 10/90 down feather insert. As with any hand-printing, slight variations in patterns can result. 50% linen/50% cotton cover. Cover is removable and can be machine-washed cold.

    shophorne.com
Introduced in 1962 by Mogens Lassen, the Kubus collection represents his lifelong devotion to the Bauhaus ideal of functionalism, where rationalism trounces the merely ornamental. The collection is also a fine example of his craftsman's appreciation of materials. Here, he uses the solid stock steel to heighten the simplicity and strength of the Kubus collection. A prolific designer and architect, Mogens was as equally adept at creating pieces to include in the buildings as he was designing them, and has left a rich archive still being discovered by design fans today.

  • Andi Kovel Candle Wax Vase

    People also liked
Designer Andi Kovel never says she’s a glass blower. “I never really wanted to be a glass blower. I just wanted to use it as a material…for my artwork.” Yet, along with her partner Justin Parker, Kovel is subtly reinventing the art form. The two renowned artists have created custom work for Lenny Kravitz, Donna Karan’s New York flagship shop and Ralph Lauren stores. Parker is one of the top glassblowers, or gaffers, in the country, and Kovel has taught at both NYU and Parsons, among other universities. In their Portland, Oregon, studio, they transform recycled glass and beer bottles into graceful shapes using an electric furnace that doesn’t emit carbon dioxide. The Candle Wax Vase becomes its owner’s work in progress. Finish the piece by simply burning candles, allowing the colors to drip and collect in the vase, an effect reminiscent of sand drawings. When it’s full, return it to Kovel and Parker, and they’ll send you a new one. Each is signed by the designer. Made in U.S.A.
