Vol. 7 In the Disney Collections
*Unsatisfied with the immense amount of Disney princess inspired collections, I finally have decided to embark on my own. All will be Disney based, and after the first 11 official princesses I plan on doing more characters. Inspiration was drawn from the style of the film, and the personality of the character, rather than the exact looks of her outfits or even exact color.
I found Pocahontas hard to dress because when I type in 'Indian' or 'Native American' or her name into the search, I just get all this tacky themey stuff that I felt wasn't high fashion enough nor true enough to the character or the movie. There's this whole stigma around white people mass producing native American culture. Most stories I have heard regarding native americans has some plot to do with their clash with Europeans. Such as in Pocahontas.
I did of course try to keep some of the common asthetics of traditional Indian garb, but I was mostly inspired by the landscape. That Pre-Civilized America vs. the Oh-So-Civilized gold diggin' England. I liked using Leather because I think of it as earthy, except 'earthy' dress usually implies a crunchy vegan approach to living that seems to be misguided. And of course in prints. I am also no longer thinking so much of the release date for these collections as with early ones--it was hard to translate mid-90s into this, and still have it look nice.
