Was $220, now $200! This stunning book set consists of antique readers and primers used by school children at a time when books were far scarcer than today. These books were published in the 1800s, spanning from 1818 to 1898 [plus one from 1912] (the earliest being The New-York expositor, or, Fifth book : being a collection of the most useful words in the English language by Richard Wiggins, the latest being The Beacon Primer by James H. Fassett). The majority were published in Boston and New York in the 1840s-70s. Included in this lot are titles by McGuffey, Beacon, and Watts on spelling, science, English language arts, etc. Condition / Notes: These books of course display some age and wear indications, including toning, foxing, edge wear, and detached/detaching boards and spine covers. Some of these volumes contain minor library markings, and many include the inscriptions of their original owners from the 1800s as well as endpaper doodles and notes taken. One small volume is in very rough shape and is missing its first ~20 pages, the rest are fairly sturdy and secure, with some chipping to a few spines. A collection such as this is hard to find, and would make the perfect display for a rustic shop, theatrical props, wedding decor - the possibilities are endless! Items are sold as-is, please ask all questions prior to purchase. We ship internationally

The wizarding world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, still arguably one of the most beloved series of books of all time, have never had a strong visual history in terms of illustrations (aside from the original book jacket covers). The movies hit theaters so quickly after the books came out, they've since become the general public's idea of what Rowling's world looks like with little wiggle room, despite Rowling's insistence that the films are not 100% what she had in her mind. This is in striking contrast to the world of Tolkien's Middle Earth, for which there were decades of posters and calendars and you name it, all with different artistic interpretations of what that particular fantasy realm would look like, years before the Lord of the Rings movie series set the look of that world in stone in the minds of millions of moviegoers. Better late than never though, as next month Scholastic is releasing an illustrated version of the first volume of the Potter series, with Harry

A reader of my old blog emailed me to ask if I still have some photos I had posted a few years ago of Peacock Hill, the black house of the Catskills. Here’s the entire set, originally publishing in Budget Living (R.I.P.), October 2003. Artists Rob Pruitt and Jonathan Horowitz weren’t what Fleischmanns, N.Y., would call typical weekenders. In 2003, the pair bought a 17-room Edwardian mansion in the Jewish resort community, painted it black, and began to turn it into a highly stylized haunted house, inspired by the Addams Family. "We saw the house as a set for a story that we created and cast ourselves in, about an eccentric homosexual couple who live in a big black house on a hill," they said. The duo also planned its obsolescence: After commissioning friends to create a permanent collection that would belong, museumlike, to the house, they sold it. A book of their "extreme decorating" experiments is being compiled. Prepare to get your spook on. All photos by Roger Davies for Budget Living, 2003
