  • Artek Pirkka Bar Stool
    shophorne.com
Ilimari Tapiovaara was committed to designing furniture for a much broader market. His goal was to produce quality inexpensive furniture that was made from materials that were readily available in Finland. The rustic simplicity and smaller structure made the Pirkka Collection very popular for use in the smaller homes in the post war era of the 1950s. The Pirkka Collection is made of solid wood with simple, clean lines which make for stylish functionality. The wood is joined together using no screws making it remarkably lightweight. The rustic table carries with it the aesthetic appeal of modern design even 50 years later. The table is available in a variety of lengths making it ideal for several different locations. The bench can be paired with the table or used as a stand lone piece. The wider than usual width makes it a comfortable seat. The side chair also pairs well with the table but can stand on its own and the stool completes the set and is available in 4 heights to make it even more versatile. The seats and table top are stained pine with a black lacquered solid birch frame.

  • George Nelson Nelson Pedestal Stool
    dwr.com
Director of design at Herman Miller from 1945 to 1972, George Nelson helped make the company what it is today. He not only recruited influential designers Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi but also created a portfolio of work that helped shape and grow modern design. His Pedestal Stool (1954) fits very well in casual spaces that require easy-to-rearrange seating. It features the clean lines and elegant simplicity typical of Nelson, with an upholstered seat pad that echoes Nelson’s iconic Marshmallow Sofa and the same sculptural white aluminum base as Nelson pedestal tables, its siblings. Designed to be functional yet unobtrusive, this stool is small enough to store in a closet when not in use. Eco-friendly as it is sightly, its polyester upholstery is devoid of antimony, a known industrial pollutant. Mix and match colors to liven up living spaces, or stick to one hue for bold uniformity. Self-leveling glides adjust to uneven floor surfaces. This original is an authentic product of Herman Miller, Inc. Nelson is a trademark of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

  • Shin and Tomoko Azumi LEM Piston Stool with Lacquered Wood Seat
    dwr.com
Shin and Tomoko Azumi have brought innovation to a range of products, from subwoofer speakers to salt and pepper shakers to their LEM Piston Stool (2000). Named Product of the Year at the FX International Interior Design Awards in the year of its release, the often copied LEM Piston Stool reveals a rigorous and original rethinking of the form and function of seating. The sculptural seat not only swivels but also adjusts easily from counter height to bar height with a lever that activates a gas cylinder. While utility strongly determines its form, this unique stool also has a visual lightness that creates the illusion of freedom from gravity. After designing the LEM Piston Stool, Shin and Tomoko Azumi dissolved their partnership to start solo practices, and they both still develop furniture, lighting and interiors for clients worldwide. LEM is included in the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Made in Italy.

Alan Heller knows design innovation – through his company Heller, he has collaborated with the likes of Frank Gehry, Massimo Vignelli and Mario Bellini to create some of the most recognizable examples of classic plastic seating and accessories. With his patented ErgoErgo (2009), Heller figured out how to improve upon the near-ubiquitous exercise ball. For years, exercise balls have been used as seating for those with back pain, pregnant women or anyone who could benefit from a straight spine and stronger core (aka, pretty much everyone). Heller has taken this sporty design and improved it for the modern-minded: More stable than a ball, ErgoErgo allows for greater fluidity of motion, doesn’t deflate or roll away and doesn’t collect detritus like hair or dust off the floor. Plus, it just looks better. Compact, lightweight and portable, ErgoErgo can be found in homes, offices, conference rooms, classrooms, lobbies and restaurants. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made by ErgoErgo, Inc. in U.S.A. ErgoErgo lets you rock gently in any direction to help build strength and flexibility, stimulate circulation, send oxygen to the brain and improve concentration. The blow-molding process used to create ErgoErgo leaves behind a seam with a very slight variation in texture, which is most pronounced on the seating surface.

  • Philippe Starck Emeco Stool Seat Pad - Vinyl
    dwr.com
After updating the iconic 1006 seat by Emeco for the Hudson Hotel in New York City, Philippe Starck took on the Emeco Counter and Barstools, stripping the classics of their back and arms and giving them an irresistably slender profile. Simple, elegant and commodious for bodies of all sizes, the stools contain up to 80% recycled aluminum and are handcrafted to be stronger than steel using the same proprietary 77-step process as the classic 1006 Navy Collection. First designed as prototypes for the Mies van der Rohe retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 2001, the Bar and Counter Stools are solutions that the museum thought Mies van der Rohe himself might choose today. Made available to the public in 2002 and equipped with optional vinyl seat pads, they have a cool neutrality right for any environment, artfully blending contemporary crispness with the contours of '50s modernism. The optional Seat Pad, in black, is made of vinyl and is easily cleaned with a damp cloth.

Eero Saarinen called himself a “form giver,” and everything he designed – from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to his Womb™ Chair to his Pedestal Table – had a strong sculptural quality. “The underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world,” said Saarinen. In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, he announced that he was designing a collection to “clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home.” Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip Chair Collection (1956) with its cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. The compact and comfortable Tulip Stool has a swivel seat with padded cushion. Each stool is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinen’s signature. Young plantation-grown teak trees are routinely cleared to make room for higher-yield trees. Rama Watana designed his solid Teak Stool (2008) as a vehicle for this underappreciated sustainable material, which is simply too thin to be used in standard furniture manufacturing. Because of its simple shape, the rustic yet refined Teak Stool can be used alone as a seat or side table, or it can be grouped in multiples for use as a coffee table. Like all teak, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Suitable for indoor use only. Made in Thailand.

The Cobbler Stool is the big brother of the traditional milking stool. Both have proved their worth as indispensable work tools through the ages. The stool is very simply styled and designed to fit in with most dining tables so that it can be used as an extra chair. Or it can simply just sit against the wall as a decorative item when not in use _ on its own or as part of a set. The Cobbler Stool is a reinterpretation of a time-honored classic that adds a very special sense of cosiness and nostalgia to a modern home interior.

Jasper Morrison became a leading figure of New Simplicity, a movement that advocated a more modest and also more serious approach to design. In addition to furniture, he also created lamps, home accessories, textiles, a tram system for the city of Hanover, Germany, and a bus shelter for the Vitra Campus. Light and velvety to the touch, Morrison’s Vitra Cork Stools (2004) are shaped from a massive yet lightweight piece of pressed agglomerate cork. He designed this family of stools, which also work well as side tables, to be made with unsealed cork so they would develop a beautiful patina over time. Made in Poland.
