  • New York City #4 Train Subway Sign
    chairish.com
New York City #4 Train Subway Sign
This is a subway sign fabricated in the early 1980s for the New York City subway. It is a bold white text on a black background, reverse-cut, with lettering set in Standard Medium per the guidelines of Unimark Associates (Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda, for the Metropolitan Transit Authority). It is made out of mylar material so that it maintains a general translucency. One of Vignelli's famous 'bullet' colored numbers is on the left of the sign, which denotes the specific line the train was running. This type of sign would have hung at the side of a subway car, displayed for those outside the train to see, while a smaller, similar sign hung on the inside. The service depicted is the #4 Lexington Avenue line, which runes from Utica Avenue in Brooklyn to the Bronx. This sign makes an excellent modern piece framed, and hung backlit it looks even more striking. Condition is absolutely mint.

Train Insane or Stay the Same Barn Wood Sign Gym Workout Sign Exercise Sign Workout Room Decor
This is a handmade one of a kind wall sign. I made a pallet like sign out of local 100 year old barn wood and then hand painted the background cream and white and painted the words 'train insane or stay the same'. I then distressed it to give it an old aged look for a primitive shabby chic style. Since this is a truly one of a kind piece the wood will vary some with knots or holes and the distressing will be slightly different. This would make a great christmas gift. Would be a great inspirational piece to add to your home gym. Size: 12' x 12' other sizes available: 16' x16' 20' x 20' 24' x 24'

  • 1980s New York "G" Train Subway Sign
    chairish.com
1980s New York "G" Train Subway Sign
Before the advent of LCD screens and the modernizing of the New York subway's directional signage and station signage, the process of indicating a destination was rather rudimentary. For every possible route and destination of a train line, an individual sign was reverse printed on a semi-translucent mylar (an industrial plastic that replaced vellum in many uses) 'roll' sign, upon which the train's conductor was required to select the appropriate sign for any service a train might run. Distinct from the "E" train to the World Trade Center was the "N" train to Astoria, or the "F" train to Coney Island, and customers needed to be informed of service patterns. These roll signs--often nearly 40 feet in length--proved cumbersome and tedious, however, and by the 1990s the vast majority of the signs had been replaced with screens or broken into smaller sign modules that could be individually chosen at a quicker pace. But the larger rollsigns have an important design heritage. In the 1960s, as the city Transit Authority reviewed the state of its system, it became clear that existing signage was out of date, confusing, and lacked a coherent sign language. Seeking to remedy this problem, the city contracted the Unimark company, led by the famous Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda of Milan, to redesign the sign system. From platform 'pillar' signs to rollsigns such as these, the team codified an entirely new style of sign design for the system, which has largely stayed in use through the present day. At the core of the design was a new, sans serif font--the modernist staple Helvetica (though initially Akzidenz-Grotesk due to availability issues)--and a bold, high-contrast design language: black on white and later white on black. In the now legendary 1972 Graphic Standards Manual (reprinted recently to great critical acclaim), rollsigns just like these were codified per Vignelli's desires: a colored sign "bullet" on the left would indicate a lettered line, while the north and south destinations of the route would be printed in large sans serif white text on the right. That design would shift slightly over the years as colors changed and the backing of the bullet switched from white to black, but the fundamental graphics and dimensions of the signs remained just as Vignelli specified. This sign, cut professionally from the last series of these rolls ever produced, is one of the final signs of the Vignelli rollsign era. It was produced in the late 1980s and lasted until the car class's conversion to screens and LCDs not all that long afterwards. The destinations shown are the Queens Plaza and Church Avenue terminals in the Long Island City and Kensington neighborhoods of New York, though other signs were printed and are available from this seller for similarly famous destinations like the former World Trade Center. The sign is cut straight on all ends--any bending in the photo is from the natural rolling of the sign and the limitations of the weights on the sign--and will be shipped rolled in a sturdy tube. Framed or mounted (cold mount only), these signs make incredible pieces of urban decoration, and the design statement of Vignelli's bold Helvetica text is sure to impress in any room. Condition is mint save for a few speckles of dust.

New York City Subway Times Square Shuttle Sign
This is an subway sign fabricated in the early 1980s for the New York City subway. The service depicted is the "S" shuttle line, which runs between the well-known Times Square to Grand Central stations. This sign makes an excellent modern piece framed, and hung backlit it looks even more striking. Condition is absolutely mint.

  • 1947 New York Subway Sign Box
    chairish.com
1947 New York Subway Sign Box
This incredibly historic, carefully cleaned and fully functional piece of machinery is an iconic symbol of the New York City subway. This box, which contains a 30 foot vellum scroll to be moved using a bronze crank, would have been installed at the front and center of a subway car in service on any of the city's lettered "IND" subway lines. A conductor or motorman would crank the box to the appropriate sign before setting off in service, and the backlit sign (the vellum shows light wonderfully) would reveal to straphangers on the platform the destination of the approaching subway train. The destinations included are as diverse as they are iconic: from the famous CONEY ISLAND in Brooklyn through HUDSON TERMINAL (later the World Trade Center) in Manhattan all the way through Queens to the Bronx in on the Grand Concourse. "Forest Hills" and "Boro Hall" are included, as are a variety of Midtown and upper Manhattan destinations. The box itself is in nearly immaculate condition and cranks easily, with slightly more tension in one direction than the other. The vellum roll is in very good period condition, with some folding along the far edges of the sign and dirt on some of the most heavily used destinations. Different sections of the scroll--all sewn together--date to different times: the earliest are 1930s or 1940s originals, while there are a couple of 1950s and one 1960s addition made as subway service changed. Some are bright white over black, while others are a light yellow. There are no significant tears or destinations that are difficult to make out, a testament to the careful preservation of the sign. The box was initially installed in an R10 class subway car, meaning it was removed from service likely between 1983 and 1985. It entered service in 1947, as labeled on the builder's plate at the bottom of the box for the Hunter Illuminated Car Sign Company. The bold white-on-black text has grown so iconic in recent years that many interior decorators choose to frame the scroll within the box, celebrating the post-Deco design aesthetic. For those interested, the scroll may be purchased separately at significantly lower cost. It is a rare treat to see a piece of history so well-preserved.

I love old circus prints - they've been a bit of an obsession of mine recently. This is one of a series that shows circus performers. This one shows the trains in the distance and the parade of different performers and animals, and the crowd cheering them on. This 11x14" print is not an original and was fairly recently made. However, the actual piece was made in the late 1800's. It's a high quality print on a textured paper and is sold unframed.

  • 1980s New York "R" Train Subway Sign
    chairish.com
1980s New York "R" Train Subway Sign
The destinations shown are the iconic Canal Street in Manhattan and well known 179th Street in the Jamaica neighborhood of New York, though other signs were printed and are available from this seller for similarly famous destinations.

The destinations shown are the iconic World Trade Center terminal and well known 179th Street in the Jamaica neighborhood of New York, though other signs were printed and are available from this seller for similarly famous destinations.

  • New York City Subway #5 Train Sign
    chairish.com
New York City Subway #5 Train Sign
The service depicted is the "5" express line, which runs between Dyre Avenue in the Bronx and Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. The sign is of the smaller variety of signs, meant for display inside the car. This sign makes an excellent modern piece framed, and hung backlit it looks even more striking. Condition is absolutely mint.

Why uv blocking glass is important: uv rays that come from all types of light degrade colors and specimens. In order to preserve the beautiful colors and the specimen, it is important to have a frame with uv blocking glass. Museums do this as well as all our framed insect displays. Real framed butterfly details: 6x6 inch wood gallery shadowbox. You can choose black or white frame. Uv conservation glass blocks 99 of uv light rays to protect against fading and help keep pieces brighter, longer. • Original New York City Subway Sign
    chairish.com
Original New York City Subway Sign
This is a miraculously well-preserved original New York City subway sign dating to the early years of the city subway system. This is a sign 'curtain' or 'scroll,' still attached to its original pair of rollers, that would have been mounted in a 'sign box' to illustrate the destination and service of a given train. Conductors and motormen would change the signs as appropriate for the given service, and straphangers would see just one of these destinations at a time. Given this is the entire scroll, all of the iconic destinations (Times Square, Coney Island, City Hall, etc.) are listed together. The roll is made of a vellum, oil cloth material and is split into two sections. The first section (concluding with "Queens Plaza") reflects the routes of roughly 1924, when the BMT subway cars that carried these signs entered service. The second section (from "Whitehall St" to "Ditmas Ave.") is an additional section added on around in the 1930s after the opening of some new stations, like the 8th Avenue stop on the Canarsie Line, or today's "L" train between Brooklyn and Manhattan. These signs were replaced during years of use due to wear, so the sections may date anywhere between the 1924 and the 1950s. The latter section seems to be somewhat cleaner and newer, so it seems possible it is a newer addition. At the absolute latest, that sign dates to the early-1950s--the subway car it was attached to would have been removed from service by the 1960s! There is an incredibly diverse selection of locations on either scroll, from the Bowery to Brighton Beach to Broad Street outside the New York Stock Exchange. The roll would look phenomenal framed or hung, either in its entirety or split between the sections. The bold sans-serif text looks striking in any light, and the black matte vellum has a particularly to it. The sign has aged extremely well after just less than one hundred years and with at least forty spent in the dirty subway, likely being cranked roughly by hurried conductors. The vellum has two sections of tearing that can be easily flattened and re-attached if framed: 6th Av Manhattan / Astoria, and Atlantic Av/Eastern Parkway. Some excess vellum from the side towards the bottom of the roll is also slightly torn, which is common on such signs. I have made no repairs to preserve the originality of the sign, but its condition as-is is generally excellent. Even the rollers at either end are unbent and well-preserved. The entire roll is about nine feet long, with some excess black vellum at either end. This can be covered by rolling the sign, or cut easily in framing. The scroll is 19" wide, not including an additional inch from the metal roller. If preferred, the sign can be easily detached from these rollers and framed separately. In any presentation, this is a unique and original piece of New York history far more interesting than the many poorly-made, screen-printed replicas out there.
  • Claude Monet 'Apple Trees in Bloom at Vetheuil 1887' Hand Painted Framed Canvas Art
    overstock.com
Claude Monet 'Apple Trees in Bloom at Vetheuil 1887' Hand Painted Framed Canvas Art
Hand painted oil reproduction of a famous Monet painting, Apple Trees in Bloom at Vetheuil 1887. The original masterpiece was created in 1887. Today it has been carefully recreated detail-by-detail, color-by-color to near perfection. Why settle for a print when you can add sophistication to your rooms with a beautiful fine gallery reproduction oil painting? Giverny sits on the banks of the River Seine. The village lies 50 miles Northwest from Paris, on the border next to the province of Normandy. Claude Monet noticed the village of Giverny while looking out the window of a train. In 1890 Monet bought a house and land in Giverny and created the magnificent gardens he wanted to paint. While Monet successfully captured life's reality in many of his works, his aim was to analyze the ever-changing nature of color and light. Known as the classic Impressionist, Monet cannot help but inspire deep admiration for his talent in those who view his work. This work of art has the same emotions and beauty as the original. Lady in Blue Veil by Lester A. Gillette
Beautiful oil portrait of unknown lady in blue veil untitled and unsigned but attributed to Lester A. Gillette, American artist 1855-1940. L. A. Gillette was a resident of my hometown, Topeka, Kansas, and a founding member of The Topeka Art Guild which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, 2016. Mr. Gillette was born in Columbus, Ohio and after marrying he moved to San Francisco and studied painting at the California School of Design where he trained under Thomas Hill and Virgil Williams. He also studied under Birge Harrison, Mitchell Jacobs, George Elmer Browne, and John F. Carlson. He was also a student at the Art Institute of Chicago and pupil of William Merritt Chase. He moved to Topeka in 1900 where he was a partner in a coal and lumber business until he retired in 1920 and spent the rest of his life painting. I purchased this lovely lady at Mr. Gillette’s granddaughter’s estate sale approximately 20 years ago. She has been hanging in my home since and I am now ready to share her with you. ADDENDUM: I received the following letter from a gentleman viewing this painting online and it further establishes the fact it is painted by L. A. Gillette. He gave me permission to copy and paste is words: "I lived in Topeka for several years from ~1974-1981 while finishing undergraduate school at Washburn University and my MBA at KU. During my time in Topeka, I was on the board of directors of the Topeka Art Guild. I was was also active with the Mulvane Art Gallery and the Friends of the Library (and was assisted Larry Peters in puttting on certain exhibitions at the latter). I also became well acquainted with Ms. Rosamond Nyman, L.A. Gillette's granddaughter. I purchased a number of his paintings from her and helped her sell others (as she could use the extra money). She had inherited her grandfather's house and studio (where she taught music) and I spent many hours there looking at paintings and listening to her stories about her grandfather. One of L.A. Gillette's paintings I remember well that hung in her home (and that was not for sale) is your "Portrait of Lady in Blue Veil". It was one of her favorites. Kindest regards, Kenneth H. Wiese" Gorgeous portrait of unknown lady, untitled and unsigned but attributed to Lester A. Gillette. She is in wonderful condition. Weight – 7 pounds

1918 Original American Marine Recruitment Poster
Date: Circa 1917-1918 Size: 27 x 39.5 inches Notes: Poster, lithograph, linen backed Artist: Sidney H. Riesenberg About the poster: This poster shows a U.S. marine holding a rifle while patrolling the docks. He looks out to the viewer, inviting them to recruit for service in the Great War. The image, designed by Sidney H. Riesenberg in 1918, was used in numerous American cities, which explains why the address along the bottom (this one directed to those living in Boston) varies from one version to another. The poster has been recently linen backed and is ready to be framed! Please ask to see more photos should you have any questions regarding the poster's condition. About the Artist: According to Wikipedia, Riesenberg (1885 – 1971) "was an illustrator and artist who lived in Yonkers, NY and commuted to his studio in NYC by train. He is known, as a professional illustrator, for his posters for the United States Marine Corps and the Liberty bond programs, for his painted pulp covers, magazines, and for oil paintings of diverse subjects. He retired from his professional work and dedicated his full-time energy to painting fine arts and teaching. He began, in 1937, spending summers in Rockport, MA, where he painted scenes of the small fishing town. He was active in the Rockport Art Association, teaching oil painting and participating in water color figure painting classes." We also found a fun fact about his older brother Felix Riesenberg, who "became a world-famous explorer, sea captain and author of sea stories. He was the navigator of the airship America in the first attempt to reach the North Pole by dirigible in 1907." (http://artofthegreatwar.info) One would say that the love of the sea ran in the family!

  • 1913 French Art Deco Car Poster, Gamy

1913 French Art Deco Car Poster, Gamy
Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed 'M. Montaut', she also used the name 'Gamy', an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labor intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. This poster is labeled: "The Dedalia Car, first prize winner at the 1913 ACF Grand Prix for Cycle Cars." It's in excellent condition.
