+ Settle Down - No Doubt

I didn’t see any of the girls around when I tried to make my way up to the third (and forbidden) floor. They were probably in the women’s room, having polite conversations while drinking tea. I faked being sick today to my maids, who were concerned and sad that I wouldn’t be joining the other girls today. But I had to do this, after all, it was the reason why I was in the castle competing against girls from the entire nation for a royal title. I needed to have an advantage.

“You don’t get it, father. They’ll be crossing the river, invading us from north.” I overheard Prince Maxon’s voice.

“They’ll come from south, Maxon. Don’t be stupid. They’ve always come from south.” King Magnusson retaliated. I could feel the tension from outside the room. I only wished to see their faces, but I didn’t exactly needed to; I imagined Prince Maxon having a stern look in his face, eyebrows knitted, while King Magnusson scolded his son for not following his steps.

“Dad, just listen to me!” Prince Maxon’s voice rose. He was getting annoyed at his own father.

“You can’t just do that. One day you will rule this nation. You are to make good decisions or it won’t last and we’ll fall to the rebels.” King Magnusson said with a tone of lament at his son’s poor choices.

“Father, I understand that. But I am almost certain they /will/ come from up north.” Prince Maxon said, “Just take a look at the map, please?”

King Magnusson hesitated, “I think you might be right, Maxon.” At that exact moment, I got a cramp on my leg, causing me to recoil in pain against the wall. “What was that?” He inquired.

“I’ll take a look.” Prince Maxon replied and I could hear the footsteps closing in on me, so I did the obvious thing: I took off my heels and ran on my tiptoes.

I made it to the second floor in record time, my hair sticking out all over my face. I combed it with my fingers, slipped the heels back on and made my way down stairs as relaxed as I could. Then I saw Prince Maxon walking towards me.

“Lady Aisling? I was told you were ill today, is that right?” Prince Maxon asked with concern in his voice.

I nodded, “Thank you, your highness. I am feeling better.” I gave him a coy smile. “I’d better join the rest of the ladies in the women’s room.”

“Very well.” He nodded. “I am glad you’re feeling better.”

“Me too.” I bowed and rushed to the women’s room, thankful he didn’t see anything. Or at least, I hoped he didn’t.
