  • Miyazaki Masterclass HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE
    More info
We took the month of October off for Halloween purposes, but we're back with the final three films by Hayao Miyazaki. If you'd like a refresher course, you can read my previous Miyazaki Masterclass essays right here. After his Oscar win with the magical Spirited Away, Miyazaki took a bit of a break. He'd made eight films in his nearly 3 decade career and produced many more with his company Studio Ghibli. His films all possessed a magical, fairy tale aspect, but his last two movies, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away had been deeply personal, much darker than his previous work, and emotionally taxing. He could have stopped making films and his legacy still would have been secured, and celebrated. But he wasn't quite finished yet. For his ninth film, Miyazaki would return to familiar ground with castles and magicians and curses and flying, but from a different point of view. With the exception of his first film, which was a continuation of an existing television anime and popular manga,

  • 1915 Art Nouveau Fairy Tale Books - Set of 2
    chairish.com
Fairy Tales can come true! It can happen to you - with this lovely set of two Art Nouveau antique Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales books. This pair was published in 1915 in The Netherlands, and illustrated by the famed children's book artist, Rie Cramer. Although you may not read Dutch, the lovely colored plates are worth 1000 words in any language. The front of each book features a paste-down illustration from a story inside. But inside each book, there are a two beautiful color illustrations "tipped in" - that are not completely glued to the page. This will make it easy to remove these illustrations, if you want to frame them. Also each of the four chapters in each book has a b/w illustrated chapter heading . The end papers are also illustrated. One of the "Sprookjes van Hans Andersen" is 48 pages long (the book with the lovely woman on the cover). The other is 56 pages. This book has the owner's name and address on the first free end paper. The owner was Dutch. She was a world traveler, and a prolific book collector and these two lovely books come from her collection. The book covers have some age-related wear -sunned along the edges and very light damp stains on the right sides. The illustrated end papers in each book are tanned - but the interiors are otherwise clean and bright - with just some mild margin sunning. Both Frontis color illustrations are so engaging! This pair of books will appeal to Art Nouveau and antique children's book collectors. Also, fans of Hans Christian Andersen and the classic art of illustrator Rie Cramer. Although the books don't have copyright dates, after some research, I learned they were published in 1915.

  • McKinley & Roosevelt First Editions Books - Pair
    chairish.com
Nothing like boning up on Presidential history during an election year. So, here are two First Edition antique books on the 25th and 26th Presidents - William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. 'The Authentic Life of President McKinley' is a Memorial Edition, was published in 1901 after his assassination. This 504-page hardcover, by Alexander K. McClure and Charles Morris, is from W.E. Scull. It is a presumed First Edition, illustrated "with original photos, original drawings and pictures of the family". This book also includes "A Life Sketch of Theodore Roosevelt," McKinley's Vice President, who succeeded him as the 26th President. 'Roosevelt's Thrilling Experiences In The Wilds Of Africa Hunting Game' was published in 1909 by J.T. Moss, , shortly after President Roosevelt's second term ended. This 448-page hardcover is a presumed First edition, and it includes both original photographs and drawings of Roosevelt's adventures in Africa. Written by Marshall Everett, the book details Roosevelt's 15-month hunt in Africa to "collect" big game specimens for The Smithsonian Institution. His journey from New York and into the wilds of little-known Africa is the focus of this book. Both of these cloth-bound books are worn and rubbed. The original paste-downs on both front covers are scratched and, in McKinley's case, mostly obliterated. But the McKinley book is in good, bright condition inside. It has a weak hinge, but no noticeable foxing or staining. The original photos are tinted a pale blue. The former owner left his book plate on the inside front cover. The Roosevelt book is sunned along a number of page margins, and also some of the pages - but the text, photos and illustrations are all in readable condition. The last page (on Monkeys) is torn on its edges & mostly detached. But the saga of President Roosevelt's Safari appears intact., as described below - "A vast Treasury of all that is wonderful, marvelous, interesting and instructive in the Dark Continent. Including the Story-Life of Roosevelt, with his boyhood adventures and strenuous career on a Western Ranch." Perhaps President Roosevelt's legendary history as a Rough Rider partially excuses the condition of his worn and scuffed book. So like him. Together, this pair of antique books makes a compelling case for re-reading history.

  • You Have Seen Their Faces
    chairish.com
Adapted for upcoming Streisand movie. 'You Have Seen Their Faces!' What a glorious book of riveting 1930s photographs and steely prose by the famed duo- photo-journalist Margaret Bourke-White and novelist, Erskine Caldwell. Originally published in 1937, this is the First Edition reprint from Viking Press, 1975. Barbra Streisand is set to direct a film on their love story next year. This softcover(wraps) explores and describes the poverty of the Deep South, right after The Depression. Erskine Caldwell was a prolific short story writer and author, who wrote 'Tobacco Road' and "God's Little Acre' in the early 1930s. Margaret Bourke-White was a ground-breaking female photo journalist. She worked for 'Fortune' but was hired by Henry Luce to photograph for "Life." In 1936, she created the first cover for that venerable magazine. After the Caldwell-Bourke-White book book was published, to high acclaim, the couple married in 1939. They divorced in 1942. Eighty years after publication, this book is still a powerful historic representation of that painful post-Depression era. It's also a product of the "marriage" of two creative geniuses, whose passions culminated in a book. If and when the film is released, interest in this book will skyrocket. This copy is in unmarked condition, with some minor cover wear. Text and photos are bright and clean.
