  • A Modern, Classic Wedding at Le Parker Meridien in New York, New York
    More info
This theatrical couple love the grandeur of New York City. In fact, it was Katie Weidmaier’s (24 and an actor) favorite movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany’s," that inspired Ben Motter (26 and a technical director) to propose in front of the Tiffany & Co. store on Fifth Avenue. To keep their New York wedding classic, the couple decided on a timeless color palette of black and white, and as a nod to their love story, they added a Tiffany blue twist. When deciding where to get married, Katie and Ben searched for a venue that would highlight the city. “A majority of our guests had never been to New York City before, so we really wanted to show them all the glamour, lights and fun the city has to offer,” Katie says. The couple got married in St. Malachy’s Roman Catholic Church (the Actors’ Chapel), and walked across the street to their reception at Le Parker Meridien. “We chose Le Parker Meridien because when we walked in, it was everything we dreamed of and more.” The venue’s oversize windows provided a full view of Central Park, and the balcony allowed guests to step outside and see the New York skyscrapers the couple love. Katie’s bridal style was perfect for the glamorous occasion: Her custom Pnina Tornai wedding dress from Kleinfeld featured delicate floral appliques from the fitted bodice to the flowy, tiered skirt that matched her custom cathedral veil and crystal tiara. The couple hosted a lively penthouse party with live band Star Talent and with dramatic, theatrical lighting -- just their style. “My advice to future couples would be to try and relax during the planning process,” Katie says. “When the day comes, everything is going to fall into place.” See the details captured by Samantha Lauren Photographie!

  • A Chic Modern Wedding at the Chicago Illuminating Company in Chicago, Illinois
    More info
For newlyweds Katelyn (27 and a social worker) and Matt (30 and a director of accounting), it all started with a Post-It note. "We met while working at a bar in Chicago, and on Matt's first day I noticed him at the bar," Katelyn says. "I asked him what he was doing and he told me was writing his best man speech for his brother's wedding in two days." After a brief interaction, Katelyn returned to her office where she wrote what she thought was a great opening line for the speech on a Post-It note before passing it along to her future husband. "We went on our first date a week later," Katelyn explains. When the time came for a proposal in October of 2013, Katelyn was getting ready for dinner when she was caught off guard in the couple's bedroom. "I walked in and the walls were lined with over 400 Post-It notes," she explains. "I started to cry before Matt even started talking. He told me that every note said something he loved about me, our lives and our future together. He then grabbed the ring from our dresser drawer and got down on one knee." For their September wedding, the two chose the historic power plant that is now the Chicago Illuminating Company as the locale for both their ceremony and reception. "We wanted something elegant, but non-traditional," Katelyn explains. "As we walked through the venue, both of our hearts started pounding and we knew then that it was the right place." The modern, industrial space was decorated using taupe linens and soft ivory draping along with gray and pink details -- including blush-colored Juliet roses, dusty miller and white anemone from HMR Designs. Guests were treated to a post-ceremony cocktail hour in the venue's courtyard before heading inside to celebrate with sliders, a truffle station and music by the Becca Kauffman Orchestra. "The element that reflected us most as a couple was our integration of family," the bride says. "The maid of honor was my sister and the best man was Matt's brother. Three cousins stood up in the bridal party and readings were done by my grandfather and Matt's sister-in-law. They're all very important to us, so it was vital that they were reflected throughout the day."

  • About a Girl Katie Shell
    More info
Residing in a small town on the coast of Spain, Katie Shell is a short trip from the beach or the mountains and gets the best of both worlds. (Color us jealous.) We tagged along with Katie on a trip to the beach and the market and found out what she loves most about her bohemian lifestyle. Above: Lomography Lomo Instant Sanremo Edition Camera Hi Katie! Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do! I'm a fashion blogger, dance teacher, wanderer, and adventurist. What's it like living where you do? It's the most chill place on earth, filled with sunshine, warm weather (we only have one month of winter here), and happy people. Everyone knows everyone. It's a safe, calm, and close-knit environment to live in. We don't even have a police station here! It seems like you get the best of both worlds (mountains and ocean)? Yup! I live in a sub-tropical beach town on the south of Spain's coastline. It's actually a bay. We grow all our own tropical fruit; you can literally walk around picking avocados, lemons, oranges, sugar apples, figs and bananas off the trees! And just an hour away we have a ski station (Sierra Nevada). Crazy! Do you have any favorite beaches that you like to visit? What makes them so special? I've been to some pretty magical beaches. They are all special in their own way. I love to go on hikes with my boyfriend and stumble upon secret tiny beaches! It's the best feeling to work up a sweat after a long hike, go for a swim and then take a beach nap before heading home. If you have a weekend to head out of town, where do you like to go? Every Sunday I head to the flea market which is the next town on from me. I'm always on the lookout for antiques (especially driftwood furniture), plant pots and vintage clothing. When you're heading to the beach for the day, what do you make sure to pack in your bag? I always have an extra bikini with me (normally my Urban Outfitters black triangle bikini top and a pair of basic black bottoms, just in case!), one of my vintage towels, a book (currently I'm reading The Giver), a bottle of water, and watermelon. It's the best thing to eat in the hot weather... so refreshing! [I also like to bring] my Bali Body tanning oil and my Urban Outfitters Polaroid camera... aaah, I love it so much! Any beauty items that are a must-have for you currently? COCONUT OIL! I swear by it! I use it on my hair, skin and teeth. I even make my own toothpaste with coconut oil. All you need is baking soda and peppermint oil for a nice, minty taste. It makes your teeth far whiter than any teeth whitening product full of nasty ingredients. What about fashion? What are some of your go-to pieces currently? Favorite outfit? I adore vintage clothing. I love that I'm wearing something that has a history that was once worn by someone else. I always have a bikini with me, too, either on or in my bag. Living by the beach means your day will very likely involve water! I'm also obsessed with denim right now. I love wearing these cute denim cheeky shorts that I got from UO. Make us a beachy playlist with 5 songs you have been recently loving. I keep on playing 'The Less I Know the Better' by Tame impala at the moment! It's such a catchy tune and it reminds me of summer time. Add in 'Sunny Afternoon' by The Kinks, 'Pleasurekraft' by Tarantula, 'Alter Ego' by Tame impala, and 'Sun Down' by Tricky ft. Tirzah. What are some of your goals for 2016? Take up boxing, visit Morocco, and perfect my Spanish. I'm pretty good but I want to be able to speak it fluently. Finally, what's one thing you'd like people to know about you that they might not realize? I attended one of the most prestigious performing art schools in London, 'Italia Conti', where I trained as a triple threat performer. I specialized in singing! Shop Katie's Picks
