Design Ward Bennett, 1963. Matte black textured aluminum. Made in the USA by Geiger® A versatile pedestal, side table, or coffee table, Ward Bennett's I Beam Tables pay tribute to modern architecture and industrial exactness. Part of Ward Bennett's inaugural furniture collection for Brickel in 1963, the deisgn was inspired by a piece in his own long island vacation home. Crafted from matte black powder-coated cast aluminum and either left bare or topped with glass or stone, the I Beam Tables offer an auxiliary surface and a witty artistic statement. Ward Bennett's story is a remarkable one. His career began at age 13, when he quit school to work in the garment district in New York City. At 15, he designed his first clothing collection; at 16 he left for Europe, where he continued working on fashions. Simplicity and comfort were always his goals. Bennett designed more than 150 chairs, many of which have become classics. He is considered the first American to use industrial materials for home furnishings, well before the high-tech look of the 1970s became popular. He was hailed by the American Institute of Architects for "transforming industrial hardware into sublime objects."
