o9. To get settled into Theta House again we are hosting a movie night. Watch your favourite movies and binge on popcorn.
“Shay?” I looked up from my notebook to see Alex sitting opposite me.
I sighed and went back to looking at my notebook. “What do you want?”
“To see how you’re doing.”
I looked up and dropped my pen, resting my chin on my hands, head co.cked to the side. “I’m going to repeat the question again slowly. What. Do. You. Want?”
Alex sighed and I rolled my eyes. “It’s the annual Downing Charity Ball coming up and I haven’t told my mother about us, you know, breaking up so I was wondering whether you could come.”
If he hadn’t been sat in front of me so I could read his lips, I could have swore I was dreaming. “Did you just seriously ask me to go to your family’s ball?”
Alex nodded and I shook my head. “No way, no f-cking way in hell.”
“But my mother doesn’t know we’ve broken up and she will be upset if you don’t show.” I laughed dryly before picking up my phone, scrolling until I found Mrs Downing’s number. Pressing call, I waited patiently until Mrs Downing picked up.
“Hello Mrs Downing, this is Shay.”
“Shay darling, how are you?”
“I am fine Mrs Downing, I was just calling to tell you that myself and Alex broke up over the summer. Well, actually, he broke up with me.”
“He what, sorry?”
“He broke up with me. And he is now seeing a girl called Melissa, she’s lovely. A little bit sl-tty but lovely all the same.”
There was a sigh and then she spoke again. “Put him on please, darling.”
I smirked and held out the phone to Alex. “It’s for you.”
I laughed as he stood up and walked to the window, no doubt getting a lecture from mummy dearest for not telling her. To be honest, I actually liked his family, Mrs Downing especially. It was just a shame that their son was a d-ck. He soon came back and the look on his face said it all.
“Awww, did you get shouted at by mummy?”
“F-ck off Shay.” He walked away, well he actually stormed off and I couldn’t help but smirk. He deserved it, the d-ck. Checking the time and seeing it was nearly time for the scheduled movie night, I packed everything away and left the campus café, taking the shortcut through campus to get through the house. Passing the guys’ sorority house, I waved to a couple of them who sat on the steps with beers and pizza.
“Hey Shay, want any?”
“No can do, it’s movie night tonight. Rain check?” I shouted back.
“We’ll hold you to that.” I laughed and waved again before carrying on walking, spotting our house in the distance, lights shining from every window.
As I walked up the steps, you could hear the noise from inside already. Opening the door, I dropped my bag and walked into the kitchen holding two bags of popcorn.
“Popcorn anyone?” The cheers of ‘yeah’ echoed through the house and put them in a bowl, along with the rest of the food. “So, who wants to go watch some movies?”
