  • Warren Platner Platner Stool, Leather
    dwr.com
If you combined the work of I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen, the result might very well look like the Platner Collection (1962). Warren Platner worked with both of the industrial and organic design giants before turning his attention to steel wire furniture, for which he devised the structure and production method. Requiring as many as 1,000 welds and crafted out of wire and space, the Stool, available in a range of upholstery options, demonstrates Platner's belief that there is room in modernism "for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV." Constructed of metal components that are finished in bright nickel with a clear lacquer protective coating, the stool features a clear plastic extrusion ring surrounding the base to protect floors. The Platner Collection is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer.

Young plantation-grown teak trees are routinely cleared to make room for higher-yield trees. Rama Watana designed his solid Teak Stool (2008) as a vehicle for this underappreciated sustainable material, which is simply too thin to be used in standard furniture manufacturing. Because of its simple shape, the rustic yet refined Teak Stool can be used alone as a seat or side table, or it can be grouped in multiples for use as a coffee table. Like all teak, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Suitable for indoor use only. Made in Thailand.

  • Charles and Ray Eames Eames® Walnut Stool
    dwr.com
The Eames Walnut Stool (1960) was originally designed for the lobby and executive suites of the Time-Life Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Ray took the lead on design, drawing on her sculpture training. Working with blocks of solid walnut, the Eameses used a lathe to sculpt pleasing profiles, similarly to how one would be used to make turned legs for chairs and tables. After experimenting with several ideas, the duo chose three shapes for the Time-Life lobby to accompany the Eames Executive Chair and large murals by Josef Albers and Fritz Glarner. Crafting each for use as a table or seat – finding just the right curve for the top was crucial to its success – the Eameses were so fond of the design that they used it throughout their Pacific Palisades home. This is the authentic Eames Walnut Stool by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Flip it: Turn the stool over and you’ll discover that both ends are concave. Which side is the “top” is up to you.

Simple, elegant and commodious for bodies of all sizes, the stools contain up to 80% recycled aluminum and are handcrafted to be stronger than steel using the same proprietary 77-step process as the classic 1006 Navy Collection. First designed as prototypes for the Mies van der Rohe retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 2001, the Bar and Counter Stools are solutions that the museum thought Mies van der Rohe himself might choose today. Made available to the public in 2002 and equipped with optional vinyl seat pads, they have a cool neutrality right for any environment, artfully blending contemporary crispness with the contours of '50s modernism.
