Veronique Maire's Cantine summons a playful spirit in those who engage the glass and cork flower vases. The glass beneath the cork caps are immediately recognizable to anyone who grew up in France, evoking memories of school lunches at the canteen, from which these vases draw their name. At the canteen, schoolchildren received one of these stackable glasses, each distinguished by a number on the bottom - hence each Cantine vase is named by that number. The vase identified as 16 has a cork cap that sits smooth, straight and tall, while Vase 23 wears a conversely short and round cap. With the Cantine vases, an everyday object of childhood melts, as if in a dream, into a treasured object of adulthood, one that may sit among our other ‘grown-up’ possessions as winks knowingly to childhood days of imaginative play. Made in France.
