  • Antique School Books Set of 20
Antique School Books - Set of 20 Vintage Educational Books. Vintage 1800s book bundle. Shabby Chic, Rustic style. This stunning book set consists of antique readers and primers used by school children at a time when books were far scarcer than today. These books were published in the 1800s, spanning from 1818 to 1898 [plus one from 1912] (the earliest being 'The New-York expositor, or, Fifth book : being a collection of the most useful words in the English language' by Richard Wiggins, the latest being 'The Beacon Primer' by James H. Fassett). The majority were published in Boston and New York in the 1840s-70s. Included in this lot are titles by McGuffey, Beacon, and Watts on spelling, science, English language arts, etc. Condition / Notes: These books of course display some age and wear indications, including toning, foxing, edge wear, and detached/detaching boards and spine covers. Some of these volumes contain minor library markings, and many include the inscriptions of their original owners from the 1800s as well as endpaper doodles and notes taken. One small volume is in very rough shape and is missing its first ~20 pages, the rest are fairly sturdy and secure, with some chipping to a few spines. A collection such as this is hard to find, and would make the perfect display for a rustic shop, theatrical props, wedding decor - the possibilities are endless! Size listed for this listing is for one average book.

In Vogue is a fascinating look at the history of the world's most influential magazine. The complete compendium is illustrated with hundreds of covers and archival interiors of past Vogue editions, featuring the work of some of the twentieth century's most respected artists, cover illustrators, and photographers—from Edward Steichen, Toni Frissell, and Erwin Blumenfeld to Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Bruce Webber, and Herb Ritts. In 1909, an entrepreneurial New Yorker named Condé Nast took charge of a struggling society journal and transformed it into the most glamorous fashion magazine of the twentieth century. In Vogue traces the history, development and influence of this media colossus—from its beginning as a social gazette in the late nineteenth century, to the exploration of modern fashion photography and new visuals in the mid-twentieth century, to its status as the top style magazine today. The book explains the makings of the magazine—from runways, to editorial meetings, to the pages of Vogue. The thoroughly researched story incorporates first-person accounts, interviews with editors and photographers, and excerpts from stories written in the magazine by many world-renowned writers, including Truman Capote, Aldous Huxley, Richard Burton, Federico Fellini, and Marcello Mastroianni. Unparalleled in its scope and exceptionally illustrated, In Vogue is sure to be among the most important publications on the subjects of culture, art, fashion, photography, and media. 444 Page hardcover book. Colour pages. Book measures (in cm) 31.5H x 24W x 4.5D

  • The Pink Fairy Book
Andrew Lang was famous for his ‘Rainbow Fairy Books’ and generations of children including our introducer, the novelist A. S. Byatt, grew up reading these enchanting, and occasionally disturbing, stories. For The Pink Fairy Book, Lang drew upon a range of cultures and traditions, bringing together 41 stories from Japan, Scandinavia, Africa, Sicily and Catalonia, as well as enduring favourites including ‘The Snow Queen’ by Hans Christian Andersen and ‘The House in the Wood’ by the Brothers Grimm. Many had never appeared in any English collection before and Lang had them translated and sympathetically retold. Here, gruesome stories (a princess possessed by a demon devours her guards) have their place alongside unashamedly comic ones (three merry wives play tricks on their husbands to determine which is the most stupid) and an occasional tragic tale (the little, much-loved snow child melts away in the fire’s heat). This hard cover, slipcased book is produced by London`s Folio Society, who believe great books should be outstanding not only in literary content but also in their physical form. This has been the philosophy of The Folio Society since it was founded in 1947 by Charles Ede, with a dream of publishing beautiful books that would be affordable to everyone. Introduced by A. S. Byatt. Illustrated by Debra McFarlane. Bound in cloth, blocked with a design by Debra McFarlane. 352 pages with decorative embellishments; frontispiece and 12 full-page colour illustrations.
