He began his career while a student at the Rhode Island School of Design. After garnering raves for a necklace he'd made his mother, he took jewelry samples to open buyer days at some of New York's finest department stores, and soon a burgeoning business was born. At the age of 23, Strongwater met designer Oscar de la Renta, with whom he began to collaborate on jewelry designs for runway shows. The move to home accessories was delightfully serendipitous organic. For the 1994 holiday season, Strongwater sent gifts of jewel-encrusted filigree picture frames to friends, fashion editors, and buyers, who immediately fell in love with the design. By 1998, his Jewels for the Home collection had supplanted his fashion business. In essence, Strongwater created his own niche: the jeweler turning his meticulous eye and art toward a world beyond a woman's wrists, neck, and ears.

  • Alice Joseph Vintage 1990s Elizabeth Taylor for Avon Gilt Rose Brooch, Gold
    johnlewis.com
A beautiful brooch designed in the 1990s, as part of Elizabeth Taylor's collaboration with Avon. The intricate rose design features an all over gilt plating for a luxurious look, and the petals are studded with glittering white diamante stones. Few celebrities have left behind such a legacy to the world of jewellery as Elizabeth Taylor. Her personal jewellery collection included a stunning 33 carat D-colour diamond set on her engagement ring; the legendary La Peregrina Pearl necklace, with a pearl drop that was once part of the Spanish crown jewels; and the BVLGARI Emerald Suite, a collection of pieces from the famed Italian jewellery house. Many of these pieces were gifts from her husband Richard Burton, although Taylor's own discriminating taste oversaw the collection of millions of dollars worth of pieces in her lifetime. Taylor collaborated with Avon in the 1990s, designing a number of collections of costume jewellery. Taylor was meticulous in overseeing the design of all the pieces that she put her name to. The collection was discontinued in 1997, and the pieces are now extremely collectable. Please note, this is a limited production piece of vintage jewellery. • Aurelie Dellasanta The last flight brooch
    boticca.com
In an embroidery shop in India I found plenty of these antique Air force army emblems. I decided to transform them into the shape of a skull with wings by adding eyes made of two garnets in the middle of the parachute. The emblem's setting and the brooch system are in silver. Size: W5,5 × H2 x L1 cm. During my stay in India in 2008, I worked with indian embroiders. In India, handmade embroidery is currently used to realise badges and emblems. First, I recycled old embroideries that I found in the workshop. Then I designed new patterns. My desire is to use this ancient handmade work, which has almost disappeared in the West and was replaced by factories, in order to give it a new value and update it.Most of the time, I chose images which denounce the madness of our modern society, but was also inspired by symbols of India.
