Vintage Punk

The punk subculture emerged in the United States and the United Kingdom in the mid-1970s and was characterized by loud clothing, individualist and often anarchistic views, and aggressive punk rock music. Punk politics also sometimes included anti-racism, anti-capatilism, anti-militarianism, and anti-sexism. The original wave of punk bands included The Clash, The Damned, and the Sex Pistols. The Ramones are also sometimes credited as heading the punk rock movement. Early punk fashion included ripped clothing, spiked bands, leather jackets embellished with studs, pins, paint, or safety pins (which were also used as jewelry), PVC clothing, and deliberately offensive T-shirts. Vivienne Westwood was an influential punk designer who opened her store, SEX, in Londen in 1974. During the 1980s, doc martins, tartan skirts, studded chokers, body piercings, tattoos, mohawks, and brightly-colored hair became popular.
