Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames® Plywood Elephant
Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants are found in Charles' photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Eames Plywood Elephant (1945) is among the plywood pieces designed by the Eameses and one of the most difficult to produce. In the early 1940s, they successfully developed an innovative method for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, which they used to produce a wide range of furniture and sculptural objects. To render the Elephant, tight angles and compound curves require a sophisticated mastery of plywood technology. It was so complicated that the full-size Plywood Elephant never went into production. Only two prototypes were made, both of which were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in 1945 and 1946. Today only one known model remains in the possession of the Eames family. Vitra Design Museum has reproduced the Plywood Elephant at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Each miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Made in Poland.

The Sphere Table is the first of these pieces to enter production at Vitra. The Sphere Table combines a solid wood table with a large dome-shaped 'bubble' made of opalescent acrylic glass. Vitra Gueridon Bas Table
About the Designer Jean Prouve France (1904 - 1984) Jean Prouvé, born 1901 in Paris, was trained as a metal artisan under Emile Robert, Enghien und Szabo in Paris. In 1924 he opened his own workshop in Nancy and began to produce his first furnishings made of formed sheet steel in 1925. He was a founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) in 1930. In the following year he established his own manufacturing firm, Les Ateliers Jean Prouvé. During the 1930s, the company produced numerous furniture designs, as well as some of the first prefabricated architectural elements, including components for the Maison du Peuple in Clichy (in collaboration with the architects Beaudoin and Lods), whose steel-and-glass structure attracted a great deal of attention. Due to the scarcity of steel during the Second World War, Prouvé constructed wood furniture and developed simple houses made out of prefabricated parts. Active in the French Résistance, Prouvé was elected mayor of Nancy after the city was liberated. He designed and constructed residential buildings for the homeless. In 1947 he established the Maxéville factory, a facility of 25,000 square meters in which furnishings, prefabricated homes and schools were produced by 200 employees. In order to meet the increasing demand for furniture, this division came under the direction of Steph Simon as a separate division with exclusive marketing rights in 1949. Due to disagreements with the majority shareholders, Jean Prouvé left the company in 1953. He designed and built his own residence in 1954. After working as head of the construction office of the Compagnie Industrielle de Matériel de Transport (CIMT) in Paris between 1957-68, Prouvé ran his own architectural consulting firm in Paris from 1968-84. He taught as professor at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) from 1957-70. As chairman of the jury for the Centre Pompidou architectural competition in 1971, he played a major role in selecting the design of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Between 1980-84, Prouvé again turned his attention to the further development of his furniture designs. He died in Nancy in 1984. In many of his works, Jean Prouvé achieved the goal of uniting functional requirements, the honest use of materials and economical concerns with the complex demands of mass production. Beginning in 2002, in close collaboration with the Prouvé family, Vitra has devoted itself to the re-edition of numerous designs by this great constructeur. In the early 1940s, Jean Prouvé began to work more extensively with wood. The Guerdon Bas table has a heavy top in oak veneer that rests on 3 solid oak legs. These elements are joined together by a construction made out of bent sheet metal. The Guerdon Bas is also available in dark stained oak, harking back to an original version made of tropical wood called 'Table Africaine'.Dimensions: Overall Height - Top to Bottom: 13.5 Inches. Jasper Morrison became a leading figure of New Simplicity, a movement that advocated a more modest and also more serious approach to design. In addition to furniture, he also created lamps, home accessories, textiles, a tram system for the city of Hanover, Germany, and a bus shelter for the Vitra Campus. Light and velvety to the touch, Morrison’s Vitra Cork Stools (2004) are shaped from a massive yet lightweight piece of pressed agglomerate cork. He designed this family of stools, which also work well as side tables, to be made with unsealed cork so they would develop a beautiful patina over time. Made in Poland.

Design is the process by which almost all objects in Vitra's surroundings are instilled with a specific design and function - from cars to paper clips, from clothing to chairs. And design does not just mean giving things a shape. Design creates the basis which enables things to function in the desired manner. It is a process in which complementary but often mutually contradictory requirements have to be met (comfort, technology, ergonomics, ecology, economics, aesthetics). Design can be successful only when the balance of all these factors is attained. Once in the factory, Vitra staff manufacture furniture to precise standards, individually ensuring the quality of each product. Vitra has been certified for DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000. Vitra's focus on quality does not end at the factory door - they believe that providing clients with exceptional service is just as important as manufacturing furniture. In order to make certain Vitra clients enjoy consistently high quality in all Vitra products, they have set up their own test center which monitors products against criteria that are far more stringent than the statutory standards. Ergonomics is an applied science that studies the relationship between human beings and machines. Vitra produces furniture that responds to the ergonomic requirements of the body and as a consequence has a positive effect on health and well-being. All Vitra products (except for the experimental series Vitra Edition) have been tested by independent institutions. They comply with prescribed standards under the European Directive on VDU Work and are marked with the GS seal (= Gepr fte Sicherheit or Tested Safety, seal of the independent certification company LGA). Vitra's contribution to ecological conservation does not stop with a close examination of materials and processes. All aspects of the company's work involve ecological thinking. In 1991, Vitra set up an internal ecology committee to discuss environmental topics. This team identifies new tasks, and its project teams work together to find solutions. Vitra uses only non-CFC foams and adhesives free of toxic solvents; all possible materials are recycled. Wherever possible, Vitra uses recycled materials. Vitra's goal during production is to minimize noise and emission levels as well as to reduce waste. Packaging materials are kept to a minimum and re-used as often as possible. Jean Prouve collection. Dimensions: Overall Height - Top to Bottom: 32.75 Inches. Overall Width - Side to Side: 16.5 Inches. Overall Depth - Front to Back: 19.25 Inches.

The architect and designer counts to the most embossing representatives of American post war design. The focus of his work was textile design, where he expressed his love for colours, textures and graphical patterns. His designs, such as the graphic cushion Couple, now expand the accessories collection from Vitra. Girard unified motives of traditional arts with abstract patterns in his works. Even his simplest graphical patterns reached high differentiation because of their clear colours and many of his patterns and figures express delighted playfulness. The graphic print pillows vitalize some of these designs: abstract graphical or expressive figurative patterns make up powerful accents. Vitra produces the Couple pillowcase of 100% cotton and the filling is made of ducks-half-down. This is how the soft Vitra graphic cushion serves as decorative accessory for the most different furnishing styles.

    Vitra - Hexagonal Table
Alexander Girard designed the Hexagonal Table, which is presented as re-edition by Vitra. The six-sides table from 1967 is as current as ever today. The most exceptional material used is a hexagonal table top out of polished aluminium. Alexander Girard, famous as big designer of fabrics, colours, patterns and textures, equipped it with a tree-dimensional triangle pattern, which is able to mirror the incoming light as geometric pattern on the walls. This specialty and the playful effect counteract the cool materiality of this piece, whose remarkably sprayed four-leg frame is also made of aluminium die casting. These qualities make the Vitra Hexagonal Table a special highlight in rooms, since curious glimpses are assured as well as when it was presented in the 1960s.

They appear unobtrusive and unspectacular on the first sight – their whole qualities are only completely showed to the user. This makes the 03. Chairs the embodiment of -less is more”, perfecting the Maarten Severen designs for Vitra. The large comfort of the unobtrusive chairs is noted when sitting on them: The yielding, out of integral-foam made seat and backrests support the body, especially the springs, that are included in the backrest improve the sitting-comfort. The 03. Chair by Vitra is also available in the stackable edition. The difference thereby is the width of each chair, and with it the position of the back-feet. The non-stackable chairs’ back-feet come out of the seat, the stackable chairs’ back feet have been fixed to the seat’s laterals, so that the chairs can be stacked without any problems. Design Hella Jongerius, 2013. Polyurethane foam & fibers, polyester cover, polyamide bottom. Made in Germany by Vitra. Like all pieces created by Hella Jongerius, Mochi bears the clear signature of the Dutch designer: with its lovingly crafted details and contrasting color combinations, this soft seating object adds a bold accent in any living environment. Mochi is both a spontaneous seating option and a decorative ottoman for lounge chairs and sofas. Hella Jongerius developed several motifs that are full of innuendo and ironic allusions. The first motif, called Lacemaker, shows the head of a girl engrossed in embroidery and is borrowed from a painting by the Dutch master Vermeer van Delft. The portrait is surrounded by a freely formed, looped pattern. The second motif, Pottery, consists of an arrangement of ancient-looking pitchers with little embroidered hearts rising up between them like bubbles. Jongerious uses various stitching styles and different coloured threads for the embroidery, which is realized with the aid of a computer-controlled machine. It gives the images additional charm. The form-fitting knit cover was specially developed for Mochi and is easy to remove and clean. Thanks to the robust bottom surface, the pouf can be used everywhere. 29.5" dia. | 16.25" h.
