  • Normann Copenhagen Onkel 2-Seater Sofa
    shophorne.com
Onkel (the Danish word for Uncle) is a sofa that combines the simplicity of modern forms with the soft curves of the olden days. The outer shell of the sofa has a firm expression, while the cushions are comfortable and inviting. The choice of materials adds a sensuous side with its characteristically Nordic connotations. The Onkel sofa consists of a simple, upholstered frame with cushions. The inspiration for the cushions derives from the more bombastic upholstered sofas typical of the pre-1950s era. To emphasize the merger of two completely different worlds of expression, the back cushion has been elegantly encapsulated by the frame. The materials in Onkel create a dynamic effect with its plain-colored frame, mottled back and cushion and color-lacquered under frame. All in the same color shade. This is what makes Onkel stand as a complete unit. Simon Legald explains: “As a designer, I am curious about how the materials work together with the idea. Onkel is a sofa that was derived of a dialog between craftsmanship and industry. In creating Onkel, I have revived old craftsmanship techniques and used them in a new context. In doing this, the details add character to Onkel.” Onkel is a recognizable Scandinavian design and is available in three colors both as a two or three-seater sofa upholstered with fabrics from Gabriel.

  • Stephen Kenn Inheritance Sofa - Black Wool & Brass
    shophorne.com
Los Angeles based designer Stephen Kenn has long been inspired by clean and simple design aesthetics and the stories inherent in vintage military fabrics. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. The collection was the result of an exploration of how furniture is constructed, and then a desire to distill the process down to the barest bones. Likening the process of furniture construction to the way the human body is constructed, the frame, belts, and cushions became the bones, muscles, and skin of each piece. Soft black wool cushion covers, black webbing with black leather belts, on a light brass plated frame.

The Marshmallow Sofa by George Nelson can be considered as one of the first pop art designs of the furniture design. With the design of 1956 Nelson turned the traditional sofainto a three-dimensional report made of soft, colourful cushions. Every single cushion of seat and back rest lay symmetrical, like a waffle form, to the opposite to each other. It is supported by a simple steel structure. The, in the past, new system of the additive construction enables - not like usual sofas - a big colour, and form selection. But it had the consequence, that the production was really expensive because they were hand made. Besides that, because of its unusual design, the sofa did not fit into the contemporary interiors. For this reason, the production of the Marshmallow Sofa had to be closed in 1965. To the Marshmallow Sofa is also a extension element obtainable. Those come with six single cushions and can be put between two sofas, and it is expandable. More details: Design: George Nelson. Material: 18 Cushions in vinyl red, orange, green, purple and blue, frame: Square tube, black. Measurements: 820 X 1313 x 805 mm. Also in our blog: Pop Art Design in the Vitra Design Museum

George Nelson is one of the most influential personalities in U.S. Design after 1945. As of 1946 he was for many years head of the Design Department at the Herman Miller company, on whose behalf he engaged designers hardly known at the time, such as Charles Eames , Isamu Noguchi , and Alexander Girard. And he was also inspired by other areas of culture: Along with his work as an architect, he concerned himself with ongoing sociological and artistic themes. Nelson’s ”Marshmallow”-sofa must be considered one of the earliest "Pop Art" furniture designs: The transformation of a traditional sofa into a threedimensional structure made of soft, colored cushioning. The seat and back are supported by a steel construction and the unit has the shape of an axially symmetrical folded-out waffle. The original of the Marshmallow Sofa was designed by George Nelson in 1956 and it is produced as 1:1 model by the Herman Miller Furniture Company, Zeeland/Michigan/USA and the Vitra International AG, Basel/Switzerland since 1956.
