The Amoebe emerged in 1970 in several editions for Verner Panton’s famous Visiona installation. The Danish presented revolutionary new living concepts there, which are still very current and even modern. The name Amoebe shows that Verner Panton thought of living organisms in his one-piece, flowing chairs – Panton’s natural shape doesn’t know any aging. The Amoebe is a succeeded example for this type of ground-based lounge chairs and it embodies the happy-cheeky 70s. Conventional chairs weren’t desired anymore, it was about low, comfortable furniture to be used in many different ways instead. The flexible backrest of the Vitra Amoebe Highback shows up sculptural over its head and it forms a kind of canopy over the user. The Amoebe Highback armchair therewith transmits a feeling of comfort and retreat – especially in big, open rooms. Vitra manufactures the organic armchair of a laminated structure with foam cushions, which are coated with the sophisticated Tonus fabric by Kvadrat.

Design Verner Panton, 1970. Laminated structure, foam upholstery. Made in Germany by Vitra. "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton. The Amoebe was originally dreamed up for Panton's Visiona installation. It is a marvelous example of close-to-the-floor lounge furniture and embodies the spirit of the early 70's. In bright colors, the re-edition delivers even greater comfort thanks to its flexible backrest shell. 31.75" H | 24.5" w | 32.5" d.
  • Artifort Tulip Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Pierre Paulin, 1965. Upholstery, polished swivel base, chrome. Made in Holland by Artifort. "A chair should be more than simply functional. It should be friendly, fun and colorful." -Pierre Paulin. As if Pierre Paulin had premonitions of Flower Power, the simple Tulip spreads its half-open petals around the sitter, inviting and warming at the same time. The Tulip is stately with a high back, which is an eminently comfortable armchair. With its matching footstool, it makes a strong and yet exceptionally comfortable combination. Pierre Paulin studied stone carving and clay modeling at the Ecole Camondo in Paris in the early fifties where he began designing furniture for Thonet. In 1958, he became the designer for Artifort where he created a series of sculptural chairs with an inner structure of steel tubing, covered in foam and fabric. In 1968, Paulin collaborated with Le Mobilier National and received many important government commissions including furniture and interiors for the Elysee Palace in Paris. He also designed home appliances. Restored to its place of honor - the Tulip chair has been reintroduced with its original cross-base. Having once fallen from favor due to the arrival of the swivelling disk base, it can now be admired in all its original glory. The metal-strip cross-base looks lighter and airier than the disk and gives the Tulip an elegant twist. 35" W | 32" d | 37" h | seat: 15" h. Matching ottoman also available.

The Hal Wood chair was created by the designer Jasper Morrison as a part of the Hal collection for Vitra. The modern shell chair possesses a wooden under frame of oak wood and it is multifunctional usable – in offices, public or private areas. Jasper Morrison reinterpreted the classic shell chair with the Hal Wood chair. A multifunctional chair with a clear and contemporaneous expression emerged. The form of the shell offers a lot of elbowroom and the slightly yielding plastic enables different sitting positions – also sideward’s or astride. This is how Hal encourages a dynamic and ergonomic sitting. The under frame of the Wood chair from Vitra is available in bright and dark oak wood. The different colours of the sitting shell enable an easy integration of the chair in every furnishing.

    madeindesign.co.uk
Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg? for the lobby and reception areas in the Royal Hotel, in Copenhagen. The commission to design every element of the hotel building as well as the furniture was Jacobsen's grand opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practice. The Egg is one of the triumphs of Jacobsen's total design - a sculptural contrast to the building's almost exclusively vertical and horizontal surfaces. The Egg sprang from a new technique, which Jacobsen was the first to use : a strong foam inner shell underneath the upholstery. Like a sculptor, Jacobsen strove to find the shell's perfect shape in clay at home in his own garage. Because of the unique shape, the Egg guarantees a bit of privacy in otherwise public spaces and the Egg - with or without footstool - is ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as the home. The Egg is available in a wide variety of fabric upholstery as well as leather, always combined with a star shaped base in satin polished aluminium. In detail: Type : Armchair. Colour : Red. Material : Shell : polyurethane foam with glass fibre reinforcement - Polished aluminium base. Dimensions : W 86 cm x D 79 to 95 cm x H 107 cm - Seat : H 37 cm. Characteristics : Swiveling base - Adjustable backrest.
