Vitra Home Complements The American designer George Nelson counts to the embossing people of American Post-War design, together with personalities like Charles and Ray Eames or Alexander Girard. This is a good reason for the re-edition of some of the designs of these influential creatives in the Vitra Home Complements Collection. Thereby all the designs are produced out of the original materials and according to the original designs. Nelson influenced the image of the American furniture producer Herman Miller for many years being the creative director of the company. The designer created his own table and wall clocks for the subsidiary Howard Miller Clock Company at the same time. Wall Clocks by Georg Nelson The clocks by Nelson became more and more playful with the years. Thereby the designer renounced number dials most of the times. Since he was convinced about users concentrating on the position of the pointers, more than on the numbers. That’s the reason why many of Nelson’s wall clocks, like the Star Clock have an exceptional shape, with 12 distinctive dots. The Star wall clock is a star in every home. A shining wall decoration and time displayer with sculptural charm. The spokes and pointers of the clock are made of chrome and brass and the gold and silver tones interplay. The Vitra clocks of Georg Nelson appear with a high class quartz clockwork.

The Nelson Eye Clock (1957) is one of more than 150 clocks designed by George Nelson Associates for the Howard Miller Clock Company, which sold them from 1949 into the 1980s. Nelson Associates, first launched as a studio by George Nelson in 1947 in New York City, employed some of the most celebrated designers of the time, including Irving Harper, Don Chadwick and John Pile, all of whom contributed to the clocks. Until its closure in the mid-1980s, the company designed a range of products for many clients, including Herman Miller, Inc., which was established in 1923 by Howard Miller’s brother-in-law, D.J. De Pree. A bit of family history: De Pree also founded the Herman Miller Clock Company in 1926 but turned it over in 1937 to Howard, who renamed it. As for the identity of Herman Miller, he was Howard’s father and De Pree’s father-in-law. The Miller companies are not affiliated but stand across the street from one another in Zeeland, Mich. The Eye Clock, aka the Lyre Clock, was designed by Lucia DeRespinis, now a professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.
