Danish designers Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn named their company Norm to express their dedication to “working with Danish norms and standards refined over hundreds of years,” says Bjerre-Poulsen, “rather than rejecting them in the endless search for new.” The sincerity of their approach – bypassing flashy design for good design – shows in the quality of their work. These are products that endure both physically and aesthetically. The Finn Collection (2013) they developed for Design Within Reach is directly tied to their philosophy in that it was built on a passion for details, tactility in design and creating for the need. “Norm products never crave to be anything but what they are,” says Rønn. “That is the combination of utility, purity and quiet beauty.” The teak frames can be oiled to maintain their original color or left alone to develop a beautiful silvery patina. Made in Indonesia. This table has a removable plug to accommodate an umbrella. The Finn Collection has been honored with a 2015 Architizer A+ Jury Award – selected by 300-plus international architecture and design leaders – and a 2014 Chicago Athenaeum Good Design® Award.

Jean Prouvé's EM Table (1950) exhibits a dynamic relationship between the base and tabletop, following in the footsteps of such iconic designs as the Parsons table, the Eames Round Table and Le Corbusier's glass-topped table. Made of sheet metal, each tapered leg is turned out and angled on a diagonal slant to distribute the downward flow of energy on the table, making an incredibly sturdy surface for working or dining. The tabletop is finished in smooth oak veneer and lends a warm counterpoint to the table's mechanical efficiency. Reproduced to exacting standards by Vitra. Made in Germany.

Romano Marcato received his degree in mechanics in 1970. After years of designing precision tools and machines for use in the automobile and electronic industries, he co-founded LaPalma, a company that specializes in the art of adjustability. His Brio Adjustable Dining Table (2005) moves from table to bar height – and anywhere in between – in seconds. Designed to have the fluid mechanics and ease of industrial machinery, it raises and lowers smoothly via a lever-activated gas cylinder. Conveniently located on the underside of the tabletop, the lever releases the table from a firmly locked position, and the locking mechanism ensures superb stability. With its ample tabletop, Brio comfortably accommodates up to four people, providing an intimate perch for a dining or lounge area. The tabletop resists warping and is easy to clean and maintain, and the heavy weighted base eliminates wobbling. Made in Italy.

As if it had always existed: The simplicity of the Vitra Wood Table appears familiar at first glance. Nevertheless, the design of the solid wood table is from the year 2014. The Wood Table is an elegant, unobtrusive table made of solid wood whose structure gains its greatest possible stability with only a minimum input of constructive elements. The table stands out due to its archetypal shape and its harmonious proportions and appears as an old, well-known friend at first sight. Thanks to the designer Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby who created the fascinating design of the Wood Table for the manufacturer Vitra in 2014. Nevertheless, the Vitra Wood Table is absolutely unique: Its massive, (in a cross-section) oval legs are connected with strong aluminium bridges in width which provide stability and safeguard the frameless solid wood table top against deformation. The curved edges at the bottom of the table top are not only just a gesture for the comfort of the user. Depending on the viewing angle, the table top appears especially slim and thus, highlights the elegance of the design. This design characteristic is also used for the Wood Bench which explains why the two designs make a perfect match together. The Vitra Wood Table is 90 cm wide and on request, it is also available with the length of 220, 240 and 260 cm as well as in a further variant made of American Walnut.

Jean Prouvé designed his EM table in 1950. The dining table is embossed by its construction, which combines industrial architecture with formal aesthetics. Prouvé developed the EM Table for the prefabricated house project “Maison Tropique” already in the beginning of the 50s. The table, embossed by its construction until the smallest details, follows aesthetics of necessity. It illustrates the creative process and the static connection on a way we only know from engineer’s constructions. The diagonally placed, butted feet offer a constructive dynamism and strength to the EM Table. A traverse of round-tube connects the feet in order to reach some stability. The oak wood veneered table top contrasts the metal and makes the table look more weightless, The EM Table is produced by Vitra today and it is a sensual appearance for the Jean Prouvé design philosophy, which loves from the connection of architecture, technique and handicraft. Since the EM Table consists of the same material and form of the Standard chairs of Prouvé, the furniture pieces by the French constructor are perfectly combinable. Jean Prouvé designed the Guéridon table for the University of Paris, convincing with the constructive clearness. This wooden table proves that modern tables mustn’t always be made of steel and glass. Prouvé varies his typical, architectural approach with natural materials on order to reach that impression. Originally made like this because of the lack of metal after the Second World War, the wooden construction of the Guéridon table also convinces after that period. This is how the French made the dining table in 1949, leaning on the eponymous couch table of 1944. Jean Prouvé achieved in designing a modern table by means of combining the materials cleverly: A heavy table top rests on three legs made of massive oak wood. The legs are strong and noticeable, as well as some other designs of Prouvé. This offers visual resistant to the Guéridon dining table which is produced by Votra today, while the table also remains timeless and appears modern at the same time. The Jean Prouvé ateliers planed and realized different furnishing projects for the chemistry company Solvay during 1941 and 1942. Therefore, a wooden table which represents Prouvé’s constructions emerged among many other designs: The dining table is embossed by its construction, which connects modern shapes with traditional materials. Metal was hard to find in the beginning of the 40s because of the Second World War. But Jean Prouvé made a virtue out of the necessity: The Solvay table which is completely embossed by its construction follows aesthetics of necessities – similar to the later EM table, which is only different to the Solvay table because of the metal-legs. The tables illustrate the power and the static connection as if it was an architectural project. The diagonal, tapering legs make the Solvay table dynamic and strong. Round tubes traverse the table offering stability to the legs. The legs and the table top, both out of massive wood, contrast the metal and make the table look weightless. Solvay is produced by Vitra today and it represents Jean Prouvé’s design philosophy, which lives from the connection of architecture, technique and handicraft. More details: Materials: Table top: Oiled massive wood; natural oak wood, core-smoked oak wood or American walnut. Base: Suiting the table top of massive oiled oak wood, core-smoked oak wood or American walnut; traverses of steel tube, powder coated.
