(computer update- UPS SAYS IT IS ARRIVING TOMORROW!! WAHOO! again, enjoy another set a la iPhone app, though this one is much worse lol)
I ran my hand along my arm slowly as I walked into the Boar's Nest again. I had managed to fish out enough cash for a motel room, but basically, I could only afford it for one night. I had to find a way to get out to California as soon as possible... One that did not involve me hitchhiking cross country with some southern creep.
It was early in the morning and barely any people were inside. I noticed an old man sitting in a booth, shoveling scrambled eggs and grits into his mouth. I didn't even know what grits were, just that he was eating them.
I walked further into the bar and found Daisy Duke carrying a waiter's tray, wearing short shorts and a tight baby tee. She spotted me and grinned.
"Annabelle!" She cried happily. "Welcome back," She drawled, heading behind the bar. "Can I get you something to eat?"
I scratched my jaw. I hadn't eaten since before my flight from Moscow to Georgia, but had no money for food. I shook my head.
"No, I'm okay. Thanks," I slithered into a seat and pulled my phone free. I decided to dial Samantha, my stepmother, once more. I pressed the receiver to ear and waited patiently as a rung. Then, after three solid chimes, I was greeted by her voice inbox and an automated message telling me how I couldn't leave a voicemail since her phone was full. I hung up hastily and sighed.
"You alright?" I was greeted by another female southern accent. I looked up to see a skinny brunette in a similar uniform to Daisy's. She was much shorter though and generally thinner - Daisy had a more... Curvaceous shape. I ran my hand through my hair and sat up straighter.
"Yes, thank you. I'm fine."
Daisy began speaking. "Oh this is Annabelle! She's from California!" She announced happily. The brunette nodded.
"Nice to meet you, Annabelle. I'm Ava."
I shook her hand.
"Nice to meet you too, Ava."
I began fiddling with my fingers softly as the two waitresses began rushing around. Ava crept up besides me once again.
"Why aren't ya eatin', sweetheart?"
I shrugged. "Um, not hungry," I lied.
She scoffed at me. "Darlin', I'm a waitress and I know a hungry face when I see it."
I swear, I'd never get used to the accent.
"She's probably lyin' then, Ava!" Daisy called as she cleaned a couple of glasses and put them on the shelves.
I awkwardly wiggled on my seat.
"Uh, no I'm not-"
"Why don't you just tell us the truth, darlin'? We won't hurt ya!"
I sighed and ran a hand through my hair again.
"Uh, I don't have any money?" I didn't mean for it to come out as a question, but it sort of did.
Both girls gasped.
"Then where are ya stayin'?" Daisy exclaimed worriedly.
I shrugged in response.
"Nowhere, I guess."
And that's how I got roped into staying with Ava Davis.
"Okay, so here is your bed," Ava Marie Davis ran her hand along the woven comforter and grinned up at me. "And I have fresh towels for ya in the linen closet. Oh and-"
There was a loud knock at the door. Ava turned from me, smiled politely and held up a finger before shouting, "THE DOOR'S OPEN!!!"
I heard a set of footsteps make their way up the stairs as the door opened and Luke Duke strolled inside. He grinned both at Ava and I.
"Hey Davis. Bo's downstairs, waitin' for ya..." His eyes stopped and canvassed me up and down. I should have felt awkward or even sort of violated, but I didn't. I sort of liked it, really. Which was weird.
"I'll be leavin' you two alone. Now Luke, don't you go harassin' my guest, y'hear?" Ava asked, walking past both of us for the door.
Luke nodded, bowing his head. "Yessum, ma'am," He grinned.
Ava shook her head and left us alone.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, scratching the bridge of my nose. Luke smirked, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his old Levi's.
"Well us Dukes have lived next door to the Davises for a while and Bo and Ava have gotten to be quite good pals..." He shrugged. "And you, California? What are you doing?"
I hated admitting that I had run out of money.
"Oh, uh, I'll be staying with Ava... Indefinitely."
Luke grinned and ran his hand through his hair, tapping the heel of his cowboy boot.
"I see you're here to make things more interestin', Annabelle. Spice up Georgia, hm?"
"I like interestin'."
