  • Knoll Saarinen White Tulip Arm Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Eero Saarinen, 1956. Aluminum base, fiberglass, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. He designed the 1956 Tulip chair in terms of its setting, rather than a particular shape. "In any design problem, one should seek the solution in terms of the next largest thing." He said. "If the problem is a chair, then its solution must be found in the way it relates to the room..." In Tulip Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award, the Tulip is Saarinen's genius solution to clearing up the "slum of legs" that populates the under-carriage of most dining sets. The Saarinen tulip armchair features a cast aluminum base with a rilsan coated finish. Shell is molded fiberglass with a reinforced plastic bonded finish. Upholstered foam cushion is removable, with zippered cover and velcro fastening. Base and shell finishes are available in white, black or silver. connox.com
Eero Saarinen designed the first version of the Tulip Chair in 1953 and with it, he created the base of a revolutionary design classic among all the chairs – there has never been a chair that connected its base and seat in one closed form before. The Tulip Chair was further developed in cooperation with Knoll. Finally, the chair went to the market in its characteristic design known until today, in 1956. The purist designed Tulip Chair reminds us of a tulip, as its name reveals, and it combines modernity with classic Scandinavian design. The background of the design of the Tulip Chair is described by Eero Saarinen as follows: “I wanted to stop the confusing mixture of chair-feet. I wanted to make a unity again out of an armchair.” This is how the four-feet chair as we know it, became a one-foot model. The seat of the Tulip Chair consists of synthetics, fiberglass reinforced. It sits on a trumpet-shaped base which was cast out of light metal and has a rilsan-surface coating. Moreover the chair is available in different editions: Initially there is the selection between an armchair and a design without armrests. The Tulip Chair can be delivered in a rotating or rigid edition, moreover the seat is available upholstered or alone and with a separate cushion. The coatings are available in numerous different fabrics and colours. Also the chair itself can be produced in black and white. Of course we will gladly advise you when it comes to choose the right colour, fabric and shape of your individual Tulip Chair! More details:. Characteristics: The Tulip chairs collection by Saarinen includes an armchair, a chair without armrests, with rotating base or a rigid one and a stool. The chairs are available with a cushion or fully upholstered. The swivel chair with upholstered seat fulfils the collection. The KnollStudio logo and the signature by Eero Saarinen are on the lower part of the base. Construction: Pillar foot out of aluminium casting with rilsan-coating on all black and white models. The platinum bases have a polyurethane coating with transparent finish. The seat consists of bent, fiberglass reinforced synthetics. Surfaces: Seat and frame black, white or platinum. The fully upholstered seats are available with cushions in different fabrics. Many different fabrics and spinney beck-leathers are available for chairs with cushions. Awards: Award of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1969 / Federal prize for product design/„Gute Form“, Germany, 1969 / Award for design career by the Design Centre Stuttgart, Germany, 1962.
