This is the question that swirls in my head as I stand in Taylor Swift's kitchen with her four-month-old Scottish Fold kitten, Olivia Benson, nestled in my forearm. I find myself in this situation no more than five minutes after walking in the door to her downtown Nashville duplex apartment, and the flurry of activity around me is both amazing and paralyzing. While I'm idling, Swift is expertly unpacking the numerous takeout cartons of dinner that have just arrived from local grill J. Alexander's. The only proper, mannered thing to do would be to help her move the food (Fish tacos! Barbecued salmon! Breaded trout! Dill salmon! Caesar salads! Enough to feed a family of eight!) to the large antique wooden dining table. Or put out the plates. Or grab napkins. Something. But I've got a famous and unbelievably delicate creature snuggled into the crook of my elbow, and it feels like prematurely ending the bonding moment is also, somehow, impolite. It’s a can't-win. After three minutes of indecision, I gently deposit wee Olivia onto the pillow-laden couch, wash up and fold some paper towels into napkins to at least appear part of the meal that’s taking shape. Swift is wearing a matching dark floral top and shorts from Aqua and pointy nude flats. Her shoulder-length hair is wavy and loose, her nails are bare and her eyes reveal just a hint of shadow. "When I’m not working, a lot of the time I just put on tinted moisturizer and mascara," she says, before giving me the ultimate girl-to-girl compliment: "And today I put on eyeshadow for you." As a hostess, she's a natural. It's as if whatever it took to get me through her front door was a good-enough background check. (Obviously, as she’s the kind of person who’ll offer her cat without reservation.) Olivia Benson, whom Swift affectionately calls Dibbles, is everything Swift’s Instagram will have you believe. "If Olivia were a person," Swift later says, "she'd come in and hug you and say, with a shrug of her shoulders, 'Sorry … I’m a hugger.'" Meredith, her two-year-old Scottish Fold, is here too. But her personality is more reserved. She keeps her distance. Olivia worships her owner, following the singer around as she gives a tour of her apartment, pressing her face against the glass window when we walk out on the balcony and, most adorably, sticking her head through a second-floor railing when Swift and I are sitting in the golden birdcage suspended over the living room. Oh, I haven't mentioned the golden birdcage yet? Well, really, I should probably take a step back and tell you about the koi pond. In the middle of Swift’s living room is a sizable stone-edged pond with a trickling fountain that gives the whole apartment a relaxed, spa-like feel. (The Bon Iver music playing in the background only intensifies that dreamy feeling.) Thirteen koi of different sizes live in this pond. Above a section of the water is a clear glass platform from which a wrought-iron spiral staircase ascends, leading to a gilded human-size birdcage, which is, of course, filled with soft pillows in rich jewel tones. That these features fit right in with the rest of the apartment is a testament to the specificity and aesthetic cohesiveness of the design. Every inch of the place is covered with some color, texture, photograph or finish. Everything. In Swift’s words, it's "a cozy lair." She bought it when she was 18 and renovated for two years. She says she dreamed it all up, from the barn wood floors to the Tibetan clouds painted on the ceiling. As we sit in the birdcage, she proudly points up to a tiny nozzle: "Look, it even has a sprinkler in case it catches on fire. Everything to regulation!" The photos on the walls are mostly from 2010, when she was just finishing renovations.     Scarlett Johansson stars as a cover girl for the March 2015 issue of W Magazine, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott with styling by Edward Enninful. other, chanteuse, computer operating system, bombshell alien… no matter the role, Scarlett Johansson is her own woman. “When she came out of me, I was so surprised,” Scarlett Johansson told me on a cold day in December. We were at the photo shoot for this story, and Johansson, who had given birth to her daughter, Rose, just three months earlier, was wearing tight jeans and an equally snug white sweater. Her short, almost platinum hair, which would soon be covered by a Debbie Harry circa-Blondie shag wig, was slicked back. “I had a very strong picture in my mind of what my baby would look like,” Johansson continued. “And, of course, she is completely different. Perfect, but not what I’d imagined. Now, of course, I can’t picture her any other way.” Johansson smiled. As always — and I have been interviewing her regularly since her breakthrough role in 2003’s Lost in Translation — she was at once forthcoming and guarded. Johansson, who just turned 30, has been acting professionally since she was 7 and is entirely comfortable in the spotlight. (“Everyone has seen my breasts!” she said when an assistant offered her a private changing room. “I can change my top right here.”) And then, when it truly matters, she can be remarkably discreet. It was months before the public caught wind of her marriage to the French journalist Romain Dauriac. Johansson has always taken unexpected creative chances: In 2010, at the height of her movie stardom, she defied critics by acting in Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge on Broadway and, to the astonishment of many, winning a Tony for her performance. With the verve of a ’60s chanteuse, Johansson has recorded albums, and they are far from vanity projects. And just when she seemed a bit too art house, she took the role of Black Widow, the female superhero in The Avengers. The much-awaited sequel to that movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron (the trailer garnered 34.3 million hits in its first 24 hours online), is due in theaters on May 1. The past year was, in particular, a big one for Johansson: In addition to becoming a mom, she starred in two of the only interesting female-centric films of 2014. In the global blockbuster Lucy, she plays a woman who ingests a drug that gives her superior mental and physical abilities (telekinesis, ass-kicking), and in Under the Skin, she is a seductive, murderous alien. “I was completely naked in that movie,” Johansson said matter-of-factly. “She was a totally different species, so her nudity was kind of practical. I also had black hair. That was my idea — I didn’t think I should be a blonde sort of bombshell. Naked, but not too sexy.” As a child in New York, Johansson was fascinated with every aspect of show business. “I had a big imagination,” she said. “I particularly loved Judy Garland, and, to me, she did it all. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be an actor. And I wanted to do everything. When you’re a kid, they send you on a lot of commercial auditions, and I was terrible at selling things. I never got those parts. I remember crying in the subway, and my mom said, ‘Look — let’s forget it. Do something else.’ And I replied, ‘No. You can’t take this away from me. I want to be an actor!’ Waiting for the B train, I had my come-to-Jesus moment.” So Johansson (and her mother, who became her manager) decided she would audition only for films. In addition to a precocious mix of sexy and cute, even as a girl, Johansson had a trump card: her deep, slightly hoarse, smoky speaking voice. “When I was young, I would talk and everyone thought I had a cold. But when I went out for films, they loved my voice. It was a different world.” In 2013, Spike Jonze capitalized on Johansson’s voice brilliantly in Her — as Joaquin Phoenix’s love interest, a disembodied computer operating system. It's a crystal, cast in heavy metal, scented with sandalwood, very Game of Thrones. But this one — which I'm too scared to touch, lest I curse it — is a healing crystal that she sleeps with every night. Instead of sounding like a hippie, though, when Kerr talks about her crystalline ways she comes off as rather practical. Her Australian accent doesn't hurt. When she talks about "clearing energy," she makes it sound like going to buy milk. "It's rose quartz," she says brightly. "And then I clear it with the energy of the sun or the moon every three days." She waves it in front of me like an instructional. Kerr, who just returned from a hectic two weeks of travel in Europe, laments that she is looking decidedly beach inappropriate. Should we all look as such: campaign-ready in a Stella McCartney checked jacket, tight black trousers with mesh sides, and a conservative (from the front, at least) white long-sleeved top that has virtually no back. She may be dressed too warmly for Miami, but Kerr, 31, is managing her heat just fine. Her relationship with Louis Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquière, which began when he was at the helm of Balenciaga and cast the then Victoria's Secret Angel in its Spring 2010 runway show, continues to shape her career. "Nicolas cast me before I was pregnant," she recalls. "Then while I was pregnant, and after …" Along with Kerr's now four-year-old son, Flynn (with ex-husband Orlando Bloom), a new career was born. Kerr credits Ghesquière with launching her into high fashion. "He really believed in me in a world where a lot of people don't," she says. "If you're in a certain category, they keep you in that category. I started more commercially, and sometimes it's hard to go the other way, you know?" After Balenciaga came a Prada show and ad campaign, shoots with Steven Meisel, three million Twitter followers, five million on Instagram, and here she is. There are few models other than Kerr who can represent Louis Vuitton while selling Swarovski rings and also designing a line of Royal Albert teacups. "I have to approach my career with a wink," she explains. "Otherwise you can be really self-critical, because there's always someone else. I've struggled with that. The perception is that I have it all. But in the modeling industry — and I've been in the industry since I was 13 — it's not all what it appears to be. People don't realize that." It was with an eye to lasting success that in 2009, Kerr launched Kora Organics, her hugely popular skin-care line. All of this adds up to an apple-cheeked income upwards of $7 million a year. So far, so sensible. Indeed, Kerr calls herself a "nanna" (Australian for grandma), but like her trousers she's got more than a little sass. As tabloid readers are aware, Kerr, who is single, is big with the boys. Depending on the day, Justin Bieber and Bloom are fighting over her, or she's dating Tom Cruise, Steve Bing, or a buffet of L.A. modelizers. "Some of the stuff that gets written, there's not one bit of truth to it," she says. "Not even a smidgen! But if you worry about what other people think, it's just a downward spiral." Contrary to the press, Kerr isn't dating much at all. "I'll go on a date here and there if it works. But at this point my priority is my son. I'm not looking for a relationship. I'm just not." But being a girl about town, she has some opinions on the business of courtship. Having dispensed some advice at a recent dinner, I asked Kerr to share her wisdom. Ever diligent, she'd made notes prior to our interview. (She has in fact already written two books for young ladies, Treasure Yourself and Empower Yourself.) "Men don't want to be disrespected, and women feel the best when they feel cherished," she says. "So if a woman is feeling cherished, she will respect a man, and if a man's feeling respected, he will cherish a woman. It doesn't n
