  • New York Autumn - Central Park’s Most Beautiful... | NY Through the Lens - New York City Photography
    More info
New York Autumn - Central Park’s Most Beautiful Views —- Around this time every year, I get a ton of messages and emails asking me when the leaves are changing in Central Park and what the best places are to soak in the best of Central Park in the autumn. Central Park turns into a magical autumn wonderland in the fall. Let’s explore: What’s more romantic than 2 bicycles waiting next to trees dripping with autumn foliage? This photo was taken on the east side of Central Park near the East 70s. I usually enter the park in this area. It’s full of rolling hills. If you wander around during the peak of autumn, you are bound to catch views like this in quite a few places in this area: If you happen to be in Central Park when the fall foliage is at its peak, make sure you stick around for an autumn sunset. This photo was taken adjacent to The Mall in Central Park. No, The Mall is not a giant shopping center. Rather, The Mall is a section of Central Park that runs from 66th to 72nd Street. I usually enter Central Park from the east side of the park and follow the signs to get to The Mall. This is a pathway that is right next to The Mall. It has an abundance of trees that turn red in the autumn which makes it ideal for sunset gazing. Right next to the Loeb Boathouse which is on the east side of the park near 72nd Street, is one of the most beautiful parts of Central Park in the autumn. The willow trees here turn the most vibrant shades of yellow and orange at peak foliage and you get a perfect view of San Remo (the two-towered building in this photo) as well as people in row boats on The Lake enjoying the last vestiges of nice weather. Another favorite spot which I mentioned above is The Mall and Literary Walk (also known as Central Park’s Poet’s Walk). Central Park’s gorgeous elm trees form a giant canopy above the bucolic landscape. This is Central Park’s Mall at dusk on a gorgeous autumn evening. Adjacent to Central Park’s Mall are a line of protected elm trees. The elm trees in Central Park are some of the last remaining American elm trees in the world. Make sure you explore the area around the Mall and you will be rewarded with this amazing view of the elm trees whose leaves turn the most vibrant yellow and gold at peak foliage. After you admire the elm trees, take a walk around the benches that surround the Mall on the side of the Mall leading to Bethesda Fountain. I love this area because at autumn’s peak, the leaves carpet the ground. Bow Bridge is always my main goal when I go to Central Park to view the peak fall foliage. It’s a fairytale setting that seems to have made its way into reality. It’s also made an appearance in a Dr. Who episode and a ton of films (Spiderman 3 being one of them). Bow Bridge is located right in the middle of the park overlooking The Lake. It is between 74th and 75th Streets and the easiest way to find Bow Bridge is to head to Bethesda Fountain and then follow the path from there to the Bridge. Central Park is an easy place to get lost in (even I get lost there on a regular basis despite going there often) but there are signs everywhere and I have never failed to find a knowledgeable NYer who is willing to help with directions (and who isn’t directionally challenged like I am!). If you walk south away from The Mall on the East Side of Central Park and you are in the vicinity of the Alice in Wonderland sculpture (which is near 74th Street), there are a series of large rocks that people love to climb. The light is absolutely stunning there during the autumn especially when the leaves are covering the ground. If you decide to follow the perimeter of The Lake instead of going south after gazing at Bow Bridge, you will be greeted with views like this. Bow Bridge is also beautiful to view from the other side of The Lake. If you wait until the hour before sunset, the sun tends to set almost directly above Bow Bridge when you are standing (or sitting) at this vantage point. If you are feeling slightly adventurous, definitely explore The Ramble. The Ramble is in the middle of Central Park between 73rd

Tom Thomson, the brilliant, pioneering Canadian artist for whom the City of Owen Sound’s Art Gallery is named, was born near Claremont, Ontario, northeast of Toronto on August 5, 1877, the sixth of ten children born to John Thomson and Margaret Matheson. Two months later, the family moved to their new home, Rose Hill, near Leith, eleven kilometres northeast of Owen Sound. It was in this quiet rolling country side, overlooking the shores of Georgian Bay that Thomson grew up. Thomson was raised on the farm and received his education locally, though ill health kept him out of school for a period of time. He was said to have been enthusiastic about sports, swimming, hunting and fishing. He shared his family’s sense of humour and love of music. Indeed, Tom’s Victorian upbringing, gave him an immense appreciation for the arts. Drawing, music, and design were valuable and honoured pursuits. Within this Scottish family structure, however, there were also pressures to succeed, to find an occupation, to marry, and to have a family. Tom had a restless start to his adulthood. Unsuccessful at enlisting for the Boer War in 1899 due to health reasons, Tom apprenticed as a machinist at Kennedy’s Foundry in Owen Sound for 8 months. Still undecided on a career, he briefly attended business school in Chatham. In 1901, he moved to Seattle, Washington to join his brother George at his business college. Here he became proficient in lettering and design, working as a commercial artist during the next few years. By 1905, he had returned Canada to work as a senior artist at Legg Brothers, a photo-engraving firm in Toronto. Tom continued to return home to visit his family his entire life, though his parents had, by this time, sold the farm in Leith, and moved to a house in Owen Sound. In 1909 Thomson joined the staff of Grip Ltd., a prominent Toronto photo-engraving house, and this proved to be a turning point in his life. The firm’s head designer, artist-poet J.E.H. MacDonald, contributed much to Thomson’s artistic development, sharpening his sense of design. Fellow employees included Arthur Lismer, Fred Varley, Franklin Carmichael and Franz Johnson - all adventurous young painters who often organized weekend painting trips to the countryside around Toronto. After Tom’s death, these men, together with Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson, would go on to form Canada’s first national school of painting, the Group of Seven. Curator Charles Hill comments that “Thomson’s surviving artwork prior to 1911 consists of drawings in ink, watercolour and coloured chalk, of women’s heads very much in the vein of the American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson, who had established the “Gibson girl” look, as well as ink and watercolour landscapes done around Leith, Owen Sound and Toronto and illuminated text presented as gifts to members of his family or friends.” He also states “The arrangements of some texts and designs has a similarity to the patterning of stained glass and are most likely characteristic of the Arts and Crafts-influenced commercial work he might have done.” In 1912, inspired by tales of Ontario’s “far north”, Thomson traveled to the Mississagi Forest Reserve near Sudbury, and to Algonquin Park, a site that was to inspire much of his future artwork. It was during this same year that Thomson began to work for the commercial art firm Rous and Mann. He was joined there by Varley, Carmichael and Lismer. Later the same year, at J.E.H. MacDonald’s studio, Thomson met art enthusiast Dr. James MacCallum, a prominent Toronto Ophthalmologist. When out painting on location, Thomson would use a small wooden sketch box, not much bigger then a piece of letter-sized paper, to carry his oil paints, palette, and brushes; his small painting boards were safely tucked away from each other in slots fitted in the top. Sitting down in the canoe, on a log or rock, with the sketch box in front of him, he would quickly capture the landscape around him. In 1913 Thomson exhibited his first major canvas, A Northern Lake, at the Ontario’s Society of Artists exhibition. The Governm

  • About A Girl Brittney Panda
    More info
The ethereal, elegantly haunting, and moody Internet presence of NY photographer Brittney Panda has long intrigued us, leaving us wondering: amid her loyal following and signature style of shooting photos, who is Brittney Panda? We were lucky enough to travel Upstate to spend a day with her at home, and discover more about the girl behind the lens. Lead photo by Brittney Panda; blog photos by Julia Robbs Who is Brittney Panda? And is this your real name or a pseudonym? I'm just a girl who is completely obsessed with exploring and taking pictures. Brittney Panda isn't my real name! It's an old screen name that ended up sticking. We were immediately drawn in by your photography and self-portraits in particular. Can you share more about how you got started as a photographer? Thank you. It was something that sort of just happened. I didn't have too many hobbies and I had no idea what to do with myself during the day when I didn't have class. Eventually my friends and I started driving around and taking pictures with our iPhones until I upgraded to a DSLR. When did you first start shooting self-portraits, and start developing them in the moody, ethereal style you shoot them in? Once I had my own camera, I started going on solo adventures into the woods and abandoned houses to take self portraits. I think the reason my style developed into what it is was mostly because of the locations I was drawn to. There's something about places that have been forgotten that always fascinated me since the first time I went inside an abandoned house when I was 10. The way I feel inside them brought out an artistic side of myself I never knew I had. How do you describe your work? Personal. My pictures are the best way to describe me. Do you do anything outside of photography or is this what you do full-time? Mostly photography! It's what I do as a career, but it's also what I do with my free time. Can you share a little more about your background? I grew up with my dad, who always lived in different states, so it was fun being able to travel when I was young. It was always an adventure visiting him. My mom, who also takes pictures, loves to garden and go on little picture taking excursions like me, and my two sisters who are artists too. I guess it makes sense why I turned out the way I did. What artists or other photographers have been most influential to you? Francesca Woodman and Sally Mann. What’s a typical day in the life? I generally go to bed early and wake up around 6. First thing I do I drink tea. On those rare days that I don't have 50 million things to do, I want to spend pretty much every second that I have with my fiancé or breaking into abandoned houses. Perfect scenario is when I can convince him to come with me. Quick fire: The best thing I recently…watched Wayward Pines …listened to Hanson I am always interested in… Netflix and chill My fall uniform is…. black tights, giant sweater, tall ankle boots A daily ritual is… to try to relax My mantra…. be young, be dope, be proud (also Lana del Rey's, but whatever) I am passionate about… photography, adventures, and the one I love Shop Brittney's Picks

Harry Potter has been a huge part of my life. I started the books when they were read to me during primary school, and finished them sharing a book with Miguel, reading the last chapter together and crying my eyes out. I remember when the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal in Orlando was announced – I was green with envy that it would be so far away, but I knew I’d get there one day, and earlier this month that day finally came. I know I’m sounding rather dramatic here, but fellow Potter fans will know where I’m coming from!
