It is wooden with an etched gold face and a fancy gold handle on the top. The battery can be replaced with #11377 To preserve the battery, your clock will probably not be working when you receive it. Slide off the little wooden piece on the top to gain access to the clock face. Remove the clock face and make sure the round knob at the top is pulled up to set the time. Then push the knob all the way down. The clock should start working momentarily. If you ever want to stop the clock to preserve the battery, simply pull the knob back up.
