  • Josef Hoffmann Hoffmann Armchair
    dwr.com
Josef Hoffmann is well known for the simple, restrained, yet visually interesting dining chairs – several intended for cafés – that he designed early in the 20th century. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen in his work, but Hoffmann also embraced the industrial age. Rather than rejecting traditional decoration, he succeeded in making it serve structural principles, which he believed should determine the forms of buildings, interiors and objects. Whether admiring one of his chairs or the Sanatorium Purkersdorf he designed in 1903, you can see Hoffmann’s emphasis on straight, unadorned lines, characteristics that are in keeping with the style of the Viennese Secession. The Hoffmann Armchair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic.
  • Mater Shell Lounge Chair - Black Leather, Soaped Oak
    shophorne.com
The Shell Chair is developed out of Michael Dreebens ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in North India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it's waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs attempt to incentivize this skilled trade by providing these artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is an homage to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it's clean of line and is intended to emphasize the leather forming and stitching, it's deeply comfortable, and it's durable – like the saddles it's derived from, it's crafted from thick, top-grain leather, and with reasonable care, will last for decades. Frame: Soaped Oak. Leather: Black leather.
  • Niels Diffrient Freedom® Task Chair with Headrest in Vicenza Leather
    dwr.com
Niels Diffrient's Freedom Chair (1999) was a breakthrough in ergonomic task seating. With a height-adjustable headrest, the headrest version offers customized support for the head, allowing for proper eye-level positioning when working long hours at a computer station. The Freedom Chair is designed to fit almost all body types. The seat depth is adjustable to properly support the seat and thighs, while the adjustable back support helps keep the lumbar region of the body in line. Often, ergonomic chairs are likely to be improperly positioned, resulting in the creation of more problems than they solve. The Freedom Chair is simpler than other chairs, eliminating many manual adjustments and creating instead a system of internal mechanisms that respond to the user's needs. A unique counterbalancing tilt mechanism self-adjusts according to the user's weight and movement, thus eliminating the need for manual fixes. In addition, the chair and seatback can be easily raised or lowered, and the seat itself moves forward or back. Any adjustments can be easily made while the user is seated for accurate positioning. Because of a natural lift-and-release action, the armrests are effortlessly repositioned in tandem depending on the task at hand. The seat cushion provides excellent shock absorption and weight distribution for unmatched comfort. Made in U.S.A. For big shots who leave small footprints, Freedom is 62% recycled, 90% recyclable and 100% comfortable.

A footstool is also available for the Era collection, allowing ample opportunity for comfortable relaxation and rest for the feet. Choose between two lovely wool textiles with a vivid feel and beautiful structures, or soft, durable leather in a vast number of colors. Simon Legald says: ”It took a while to get the proportions and the interaction between the soft curves and straight lines on the shells just right. It was crucial that the upholstering and stitching were carried out with the utmost precision. I wanted to create individual chairs where each one had its own character. I did this through the variations of the high and low versions, and by the different frames available for the chair. For example, the wooden frames are flat and add warmth while the slimmer, round steel and chrome frames give a more industrial feel. Finally, the frame for the rocking chair is a slightly unexpected and playful choice for a lounge chair.” Priced with Gabriel Breeze Fusion upholstery-other materials available.

    dwr.com
Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple organic form, the graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong Era Collection (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the chair back and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet, who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making, eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. Swiss architect Le Corbusier used the Era Chair in his buildings, stating, “This chair, whose millions of representatives are used on the Continent and in the two Americas, possesses nobility.” Other fans of this iconic form included Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, both of whom featured this chair in their paintings. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic at a factory that’s been making chairs for more than a century.

  • Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair in Basel Fabric
    dwr.com
Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this design, Jacobsen embraced newthat allowed him to shape single-piece molded forms with fluid curves. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, he focused on an upholstered shell, believing a solution existed that would still be true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows its occupant to swivel toward a conversation or away from others if privacy is desired, and it also tilts back for relaxed lounging. Its Basel upholstery is carefully sewn onto the frame by hand. Architects Herzog & de Meuron designed this special fabric to play with the light and textures found in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. “Inspired by tweed,” say the duo, “which has the rough homespun look and feel one associates with wool, Basel is durable and informal, yet it has class and style.” Egg is finished with piping made from the highest grade of Sorensen leather, and the black and white bases are perfectly matched to the fabric. This is the authentic Egg Chair by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. This Egg Chair features Basel fabric, Sorensen leather piping and a lacquered base.

Eoos is a studio based in Vienna that was founded in 1995 by designers Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl. The name is a playful variant of Eous, one of the four chariot horses of sun god Helios, according to Greek mythology. It was the first that resonated with the trio after they spotted it in a copy of Ovid’s Metamorphoses that just so happened to be lying around their office, chosen in part for the way a horse’s erratic jaunts evoke a designer’s irregular everyday forays into the conceptual. Eoos has won more than 70 international awards, including the Compasso d’Oro. Its Crosshatch Chair (2014) balances a visually light aesthetic with sturdy construction, consisting of parachute cord precisely wrapped around a solid wooden frame and seat bottom. The chair imparts the feeling of being suspended in a cozy nest, with a slightly canted back for ample comfort and support. Crosshatch works well in both living areas and office spaces. • Stephen Kenn Inheritance Armchair - Black Canvas & Blackened Steel
    shophorne.com
Los Angeles based designer Stephen Kenn has long been inspired by clean and simple design aesthetics and the stories inherent in vintage military fabrics. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. The collection was the result of an exploration of how furniture is constructed, and then a desire to distill the process down to the barest bones. Likening the process of furniture construction to the way the human body is constructed, the frame, belts, and cushions became the bones, muscles, and skin of each piece. Black canvas cushion covers, black cotton webbing and leather belts interwoven atop a blackened steel frame. Made in Los Angeles, the collection is inspired by the characteristic principles of Soviet Modernism and bold interpretations of Brutalist Architecture through the simplification of form, receptive angular geometries and functional design.
