WTE | Willa Mackenzie-Forbes
Thursday, December 6: D Magazine wants to interview the stars of the new reality show. Be sure to answer carefully, Roslyn Taylor is known for tricking interviewees into saying things they regret.
“So, I take it you're not familiar with Dallas.” I said to my boss, Benjamin Randall, who was sitting across the desk, his arms folded against his head casually. He looked handsome and mysterious. Those clothes were doing him favors, although it's not like he needed any. The man was perfect.
“No.” He shrugged. “However, in my opinion, New York is more hectic.”
The door flung open, “Miss Mackenzie, I'm sorry to interrupt but Roslyn Taylor is waiting for you outside.” My secretary said, her face flushed.
“Calm down, Magdalena.” I said slightly alarmed. “Who's Roslyn Taylor?” I asked honestly, because I had no idea who that was.
“Correspondent for D Magazine.” Magda said, taking in a deep breath. Ben stared at her, his brows knitted in confusion.
“Where we expecting reporters?” He asked.
“Not that I know of.” I replied. Internally, I was freaking out. This was probably for the TV show and he didn't know about /that/.
“Willa Mackenzie-Forbes?” Someone stood by the door. “Hi, Roslyn Taylor, D Magazine.” She said casually. “I already spoke to your husband and he said you'd answer the questions.”
“What?” I asked, my eyes piercing through her own. If looks could kill...
“So, how shall we do this?” She asked. “I have to interview your best friend, Ashley, next.”
“Um.” I faltered, my chest rising and falling drastically. I was going to throw up. “Excuse me.” I ran towards the bathroom without another word.
After cleaning my mouth with tap water, I took a deep breath and walked back into my office. Everyone was sitting around the desk, except Magda who was leaning across it nervously, staring at the door until she saw me and her eyes registered remorse.
“Okay, sorry about that.” I said.
“Are you okay?” Ben asked, concerned. I nodded.
“Morning sickness?” Roslyn Taylor suggested. The woman was already ruining my life and I hadn't even begun to answer her stupid questions.
“Am I missing something?” Benjamin pressed.
“You must be Benjamin Randall, Willa's boss, right?” Roslyn Taylor asked. “Well, your employee is now a part of the hit TV series 'What To Expect When You're Expecting', based off the popular book and movie.” She began.
“You're pregnant?” Ben asked surprised. Great. That blew any chances I had with him... plus, it's not like my marriage is monogamous. My husband has a boyfriend, for Christ's sake.
“Uh, yes.” I nodded. “I'll explain that later.”
Roslyn laughed, “Oh honey. No need to go into details on how you conceived.”
“I wasn't going to do that.” I shot her a look. “If you'll excuse me, I think it's very rude to storm into someone's office without any warning.”
“But I did introduce myself to your secretary over here.” She said. Magdalena shrieked.
“It's okay Magda.” I said to her, “However, Miss Taylor, I do not wish to talk about my personal life at my workspace.”
“Then let's make an appointment for lunch.” She suggested. “Time is ticking and I haven't interviewed all of you.” She said, referring to the rest of the cast, I supposed.
“I don't see nothing wrong with having you answer those questions for Ms Taylor over here.” Ben said, staring at the woman with curiosity.
“I'd better go back to my desk.” Magda said, “Sorry for the interruption.” She said to Ben and me.
“Thank you Magda.” I gave her a smile. “See you at lunch.”
“Now, where were we?” Roslyn said, tapping her finger furiously on the iPad she was holding in her left hand. “Willa Mackenzie-Forbes, AGE, you've been expecting for 13 weeks and you're married to Flynn Mackenzie, who works for the Dallas Cowboys. Isn't that exciting?”
“Your husband works for the Dallas Cowboys?” Ben asked. “That's impressive.”
“He's the assisting coach.” I said, slumping in my chair.
“Willa, when did you meet Flynn?” Roslyn asked monotonously. She placed the iPad on the desk, ready to type.
“Flynn and I have known each other for years, since we were kids.” I said. “He lived near me.”
“Oh, how sweet.” Roslyn commented. “What's the thing that made you say, 'He's the one'?”
I thought about that. Nothing made me say that Flynn was the one except that I thought I wasn't desirable since no one really wanted to date me. Flynn was looking to marry someone for benefits and I offered because let's face it, I wasn't going to wait anymore.
“Probably after we saw each other in college.” I lied.
“What happened?” She pressed.
“I don't know. He had changed.” I said. The woman laughed, tilting her head back and everything.
“He got hot?” She asked, ignoring Ben who had his eyes fixed on me.
“You can say that.” I shrugged. “Flynn is such a sweetheart.” I added, honestly.
“So, how did you find out you were conceiving his child?” Roslyn asked, fixing her eyes on mine.
I thought back, remembering how Riley treated me that day and my eyes got watery. Roslyn must have thought it was because I was emotional since she grabbed a tissue and handed it to me.
“I had skipped you know...” I said, avoiding to say the word 'period' because a man was sitting next to us. I was blushing furiously.
“Your period?” She offered.
“Yeah.” I said. Ben's face flushed. I looked down at my feet, “We were surprised, to say the least.”
“I can imagine.” Roslyn nodded. “So, Willa, I've heard some rumors about your husband.”
“Oh yeah?” I said vaguely. No one knew about Riley, I thought.
“Who's Riley Lloyd?” She asked.
“A friend.” I replied automatically.
“With benefits, perhaps?” She suggested.
“I don't know what you're talking about.” I said, my mouth tightening.
“Uh, I think that's enough for today.” Ben said. “Miss Mackenzie has a lot of work to do.”
“I suppose you have a lot of work to do too, Mr. Randall.” Roslyn Taylor said. “Yet here you are, eavesdropping on our interview.”
“Okay, out.” He glared at her.
“See you around, Willa. The offer for lunch still stands, maybe you can bring Magdalena this time.”
Roslyn Taylor strutted out of my office, leaving Ben and I alone once again. He stood in front of my desk, arms folded across his chest this time.
“What was that about?” He asked.
“I can explain everything, just give me some time.” I said.
“Uh, that's your personal life, Willa.” He said. “But really? A reality show?” He said, offended.
“Flynn insisted.” I shrugged. “He's my best friend, you know...”
“Of course, which is why you two got married in the first place.”
“But there's more to that.” I said, “I can't explain right now.”
“I don't want to inquire on that.” Ben said. “I'll see you later, gotta get back to my office.”
“I'll explain later.” I repeated. “Thanks for getting rid of Roslyn Taylor.”
“No problem. No one's going to break into anyone's office while I'm in charge here.”
