April 11th, 1912 (part 1)
The first class decks are chilly but if you bundle up in your furs, you should do just fine. Take a stroll on the decks, or go swimming in the heated indoor pool. Second class decks are just as pretty and the library is close to most of the main cabins. Afterwards, we will meet in the ballroom for a special Captain’s Speech accompanied by a violin-quartet.

“I’m going to take a walk on the deck, mother,” I said grabbing my book, /The Lost World/ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Mother rolled her eyes and said, “Be on time for the Captain’s speech, please, Margaret.”

I laughed and said, “Oh mother.” I left our suite and headed for the decks. The setting sun was warm on my face even if the breeze was cool. I found a deck chair and settled down to read my book. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a literary genius. I was deep into another adventurous book and didn’t notice someone take the chair next to me.

“Sorry to interrupt, but I couldn’t help but notice you were reading Doyle,” a voice said.

I pulled my eyes away from the book and to my chair neighbor. I smiled to find a handsome young man. “Why hullo, yes it is. I adore him!” I said swinging my legs over the side of my chair.

“As do I,” the young man said, “I’m Harry.”

“I’m Margaret, but you can call me Maggie,” I said holding out my hand and shaking his. “So, where are you headed after we land in New York?”

“My family and I are headed back to Boston,” he said, “And you? You sound like a fellow American, so where do you hail from?”

“Well, I am returning to the Hamptons with my family,” I said with a sigh.

“You don’t sound thrilled about it,” he said raising his eyebrow.

I shrugged and said, “To be honest, I’m not. If you knew my family you’d agree. My father is the only one who keeps me sane.”

Harry nodded and said, “I understand the feeling. Sometimes my family, especially my older brother, is more than hard to live with. But I love them so I live with it.”

“Fair enough,” I said, wishing I had his love for family.

“Harry, it seems Elizabeth has something to be worried about,” another gentleman said coming toward us, with a smirk on his face.

I looked from this new man then to Harry. Harry flushed a crimson red and then stood up. “Maggie, unfortunately I’d like to introduce you to my older brother, Edmond.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Edmond,” I said standing up and extending my hand.

“Please, call me Mr. Vanderbilt,” he said with a sly smile and shaking my hand.

“Excuse me,” I said crossing my arms.

“Oh, I’m just joking,” he said with a laugh, “Come on, the Captain is about to give his speech in the ballroom.” He held out his arm for me to take and I did. What a witty character he was. I looked at Harry, whose face said, see what I mean. And so we all headed into the ballroom. Perhaps the voyage would get even more interesting than anticipated.
