  • Assouline Brancusi New York: 1913-2013
The pure, abstract sculptures made by Constantin Brancusi have had a large and enthusiastic audience in New York ever since they were first shown on American soil at the 1913 Armory Show. The numerous American collectors, muses, friends, and exhibitions that enabled his success had a profound influence on the eccentric Romanian artist who lived in Paris. And the feeling was definitely reciprocated. From the trial concerning his Bird in Space—which helped define modern art—to his first museum retrospective, and his dream of a skyscraper sculpture, New York was the place where Brancusi’s career unfolded. Over the last one hundred years his effect on the city’s art scene has never waned. Through stunning archival images and text by art curator Jérôme Neutres, Brancusi New York 1913-2013 tells the story of the mutually beneficial relationship between the sculptor and the Big Apple. The book also features gorgeous new photographs of the five bronze sculptures on display at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York for the exhibition Brancusi in New York: 1913–2013. About The Author Jérôme Neutres has been the special advisor to the president of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux–Grand Palais since 2010, and he is a board member of the Guimet Museum, both in Paris. He holds a PhD in philosophy and literature and is the author of many essays and books on literature and the arts. Formerly he was the cultural attaché of the French Embassy in the United States, based in New York. He has curated numerous modern and contemporary art exhibitions, including: Jean-Michel Basquiat, French COLLECTIONSs at the French Embassy in New York (2007); Helmut Newton at the Grand Palais (2012); Du côté de chez Jacques-Émile Blanche at the Fondation Pierre Bergé–Yves Saint Laurent (2012); and two upcoming shows, Bill Viola and Robert Mapplethorpe at the Grand Palais (2014). • 1931 Ripley's the New Believe It or Not
Believe it or not - this 1931 book, 'The New Believe it or Not!', was an iconic vintage trailblazer! One of the first cartoon-illustrated bestsellers (popular even during The Great Depression) it spun off radio broadcasts, movies, stage performances and even competing books. This hardcover is a revision of Ripley's first book, published in 1929. The Ripley story begins in 1918 with Ripley's cartoons published in The New York Globe. By 1931, "RIP" (as he was known) had 25 million readers and appeared in more than 300 newspaper in 33 foreign countries - and this doesn't count his appearances on stage, in "talkies", on the radio and in personal appearances. At the peak of its popularity, the syndicated Ripley feature was read daily by about 80 million readers. Monthly, Ripley received more than two million pieces of fan mail. Dozens of paperback editions reprinting his cartoon panels were published over many decades. Other cartoons and books "borrowed the Ripley design and format", but none,( to my knowledge) had their own namesake Museums and Odditoriums, located all over the U.S. and in Australia, Canada and Mexico. Reportedly, Charles M. Schulz's first cartoon was published by Ripley. It featured a "hunting dog who eats pins, tacks, screws, nails and razor blades." This was said to be Schulz's dog ,Spike, who became the model for Peanuts' Snoopy. Schulz aside, there are some pretty darned great cartoons and peculiar oddities in this book - all artfully illustrated by RIP in pen & ink. I love esoteric and eccentric vintage books like this one. If they include vintage art, even better! This rather scarce book (not mentioned in Wikipedia) is a First Printing by Simon and Schuster (215 pages). The cover is in vintage, somewhat edge-worn condition. Inside, the page margins are lightly toned - but the graphics and cartoons are clean and bright. They offer the faint glimmer of Art Deco sensibility. --'He has been called a liar more often than any man in the Country..." (from About the Author).

  • Turning Pages
    More info
The media industry is in upheaval. New magazines, daily newspapers, and books are being developed, classics are being redesigned, and the interplay between the printed and digital realms is being tested. Against this background, Turning Pages is a perceptive survey of the state-of-the-art magazines, books, and newspapers that are redefining print media today as well as an inspirational forecast of future developments. The book introduces relevant solutions for a print landscape that has been and continues to be changed indelibly by economic challenges and our shifting media preferences. It examines the creative approaches and working methods of designers who are at the forefront of evolving print media in our digital age. Renowned editorial designers not only present their magazine, book, and newspaper projects in striking images, but also comment on the stages of their publication's conceptualization, design, and production. Thus, the book gives readers a step-by-step overview of the editorial process as well as valuable perspectives on how different designers are meeting the challenges of creating outstanding print products for today and the years to come. Turning Pages begins with an introduction by respected magazine expert Andrew Losowsky, who has also contributed texts that explore the essentials of the editorial process. It features interviews and statements from leading and upcoming editorial design talent including Carine Collin, Francesco Franchi, Javier Errea, Kircherburkhardt, Ludovic Balland, Mike Meiré and Omar Sosa. The book examines how magazines such as Apartamento , Domus , Graphic , IL , Monocle and Volt are pushing the envelope of what is state-of-the-art in today's print products; how books have become the hotbed for new editorial concepts and design; and how the New York Times , Piepaper , Stuttgarter Zeitung , The Incidental and others are reinventing news on paper for our digital age. Its unique mix of visual examples, insightful descriptions, and reports based on personal experiences make Turning Pages a compelling reference for anyone currently working as a designer or in the media industry. • Oh So Pretty Punk In Print 1976 80
Oh So Pretty: Punk in Print 1976-80 is an unrivalled collection of visually striking ephemera from Britain’s punk subculture. It presents 500 artefacts - 'zines,' gig posters, flyers, and badges - from well-known and obscure musical acts, designers, venues, and related political groups. While punk was first and foremost a music phenomenon, it reflected a DIY spirit and instantly recognizable aesthetic that was as raw and strident and irrepressible as the music. As disposable as the items in this book once were, together they tell a story about music, history, class, and art, and document a seismic shift in society and visual culture.

    More info
Fiction - paperback; Faber and Faber; 240 pages; 2009. Free copy for our Book Group courtesy of the publisher. I first read Sylvia Plath's one and only novel, The Bell Jar, as a young 20-something, when I was hugely unsure of my place in the world. Indeed, I'd graduated but my career prospects were thwarted by a massive recession (it was 1991) and I was making ends meet by working part-time in a book shop. Reading The Bell Jar was a rewarding experience, because the main character, Esther Greenwood, was also coming to terms with her place in the world -- or not coming to terms with it, as it turned out. As I read about Esther sliding further and further into depression, I realised my life wasn't so bad after all. But I did find The Bell Jar very dark and bleak. Reading the book for the second time...

  • Matisse: Radical Invention 1913-1917 (HC)
Product Description Matisse: Radical Invention 1913-1917 (HC) By Stephanie D'Alessandro and John Elderfield The works that Henri Matisse (1869–1954) executed between late 1913 and 1917 are among his most demanding, experimental, and enigmatic. Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913–1917 reveals the deep connections among them and their critical role in an ambitious, cohesive project that took the act of creation itself as its main focus. This book represents the first sustained examination of Matisse's output from this important period, revealing fascinating information about his working method, experimental techniques, and compositional choices uncovered through extensive new historical, technical, and scientific research. The lavishly illustrated volume is published to accompany a major exhibition consisting of approximately 125 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. It features in-depth studies of individual works such as Bathers by a River and The Moroccans , which Matisse himself counted as among the most pivotal of his career, and facilitates a greater understanding of the artist's innovative process and radical stylistic evolution.

  • Butler Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art (HC)
Product Description Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art (HC) Edited by Cornelia H. Butler and Alexandra Schwartz This groundbreaking publication examines MoMA's collection by highlighting the work of modern and contemporary women artists whose diversity of practices and contributions to the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century have been enormous, if often under-recognized. Featuring fifty illustrated essays by many of the strongest voices in current research on art and gender, Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art presents a variety of generational and cultural perspectives and examines both canonical figures and lesser-known artists. Richly illustrated with works from MoMA's collection, this book offers a lively discourse around gender and the production of meaning in art, one absolutely necessary for a more complex understanding of the art of our time. The book attempts, in its great diversity of voices and ideas, to address the ways that history might account for the women missing from the familiar narrative of modernism; the ways that women variously fit into, redefine, or turn upside down the usual categories of art and art-making; and the ways that The Museum of Modern Art has been a site of both patronage and protest. Includes 400 illustrations. An E-book edition of this title is also available.

  • Design & Fashion Books - Set of 5
A total of five design/photography books for your reading pleasure! These stylish books put great classic and contemporary design within everyone's grasp. They have an irresistible small format packed with images and useful information At long last, here's the perfect introduction to the influential designers who changed the face of contemporary design. Overall condition is really good, a couple have some bends. 1- ABCs of Design Hardcover ABC of Design is a charming book containing a clever play on the alphabet. Featuring drawings of chairs and tables by international designers such as Eileen Gray, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Otto Wagner, Isamu Noguchi, Eero Saarinen, and others, ABC of Design slyly uncovers the first letter of each of their names within the piece they designed. Each chair or table is handsomely rendered and accompanied by a brief and informative text about its designer. Simple yet sophisticated, ABC of Design provides an offbeat introduction to some of the world's most important designers and architects. 2- Cindy Sherman Here's a series of quick, savvy, entertaining books on artists and pop culture at a popular price. It's for readers who want easy access to information and who are turned off by art-world jargon. With cutting-edge tone and text, these innovative, richly illustrated, compact books (6" x 6" gift size) are targeted at busy people who've heard of these much-discussed artists - and who know that many people, for some reason, think these artists are important - but honestly don't get what the big fuss is all about. 3- Big Hair A hair-raising journey through the era when big was king. In the beginning, there was the hair. And some of the hair was bad, but it was small. As men and women everywhere worked to improve and increase their lot, however, they stumbled onto some of humankind's most miraculous innovations: spray, gel, mousse, crimping irons, and of course, the perm. With these new tools, people everywhere suddenly found themselves able to coax their lank, lifeless tresses toward glorious new heights. The age of big hair had begun. Now, the greatest of these bouffants, afros, rakes, beehives, and Flock-of-Seagulls have been plucked from their spots in hairdressers' windows and given the respect they so clearly demand. Bigger and badder than you ever dreamed possible, Big Hair goes out to all those people of yesteryear who were unafraid to think BIG. 4- The Chair: An Appreciation (Design Icons) Hardcover In a light-hearted look at how 20th century designers have transformed this everyday item into an object of desire, Colombo discusses how shape, size, colour and materials are used in chair design, and asks whether there is an ultimate chair. (inscription on inside) 5- The Kettle: An Appreciation (Design Icons) In a light-hearted look at how 20th century designers have transformed this everyday item into an object of desire, Woodham discusses how shape, size, colour and materials are used in kettle design, and asks whether there is an ultimate kettle.

Lincoln Kirstein contributed an essay on Mural painting and Julien Levy wrote about Photo Murals. An important early MoMA exhibition catalog that includes a number of experimental photographic murals utilizing photomontage techniques. Commenting on the mural show, Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Director of the Museum, said; "This exhibition marks an important innovation in the program of the Museum of Modern Art. So far as I know, no museum has ever attempted to assemble such a comprehensive group of large mural paintings and photo-murals so that the public may have a chance to make comparisons." Includes short biographies and details of painted mural work by Jane Berlandia, Edward Biberman, George Biddle, Henry Billings, Louis Bouchéglenn Coleman, James Edward Davis, Stuart Davis, Philip Evergood, Ernest Fiene, Stefan Hirsch, Morris Kantor, Benjamin Kopman, Thomas Lafarge, Monty Lewis, William Littlefield, Reginald Marsh, Kimon Nicolaides, Georgia O’Keefe, Henry Varnum Poor, Philip Reisman, Ben Shahn, Byron Thomas, Franklin Watkins, and Thomas M. Also includes short biographies of Photo Muralists Emma Little & Joella Levy. “Murals by forty-six American painters and photographers will be shown in the exhibition which will open the new quarters of the Museum of Modern Art at 11 West 53rd Street. The mural exhibition and the Museum's new home will open to the public on Wednesday, May 4. The large gallery comprising the entire second floor and the gallery on the first floor of the five-story residence into which the Museum has just moved, will be devoted to the murals. “The exhibition, which has been in preparation for several months, has attracted advance comment throughout the country because of the increasing interest in mural decoration. It comes at a time when there is widespread discussion of the problem of who is to do the murals of the nation's great buildings. The artists whose work will be shown are all American born, or hold United States citizenship papers. Many of them are young painters who have never had a chance to express their ideas in wall decoration, although their work has shown their interest in composing decorations on a large scale. “Each artist will be represented by a small three-panel sketch, above which will be hung a panel, four by seven feet, which will be an enlargement of any one of the three sections of the sketch. Oil on canvas, tempera on wood panels fresco, ceramic tile, and pastel on celluloid welded between glass, are among the mediums chosen by the artists. . . Over sixty artists were invited to exhibit, and thirty-two have submitted canvasses and fourteen have experimented with photo-murals. The artists exhibiting are contemporary painters of every inclination, thus ensuring the representative character of the exhibition.” [Museum of Modern Art press release, August 23, 1932] In its early decades the Museum of Modern Art played a significant role in establishing photography as a modern art form. At the same time MoMA was integrating photography into innovative installat

  • Basquiat By Leonhard Emmerling
Basquiat By Leonhard Emmerling An icon of 1980s New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) first made his name under the graffiti tag "SAMO", before establishing his studio practice and catapulting to fast fame at the age of 20. Although his career lasted barely a decade, he remains a cult figure of artistic social commentary, and a trailblazer in the mediation of graffiti and gallery art. Basquiat's work drew upon diverse sources and media to create an original and urgent artistic vocabulary, biting with critique against structures of power and racism. His practice merged abstraction and figuration, poetry and painting, while his influences spanned Greek, Roman, and African art, French poetry, jazz, and the work of artistic contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly. The results are vivid, visceral mixtures of words, African emblems, cartoonish figures, daubs of bold color, and beyond. This book presents Basquiat's short but prolific career, his unique style, and his profound engagement with ever-relevant issues of integration and segregation, poverty and wealth. Published by Taschen. Content + Care- Imported Size- 96 pages- Dimensions: 8. 5"l x . 5"w x 10. 4"h.
